    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

It seems that they meant the CLI was on the CD (which it is, and the manual for it is here). I've sent a more specific e-mail now, and hope to get a better answer.

    Powering arrays seperatly in Windows?

Meh. One week every few years to add capacity, and the rest of the time I don't need to worry about distributing the data or explaining to the S.O. why the movies are on drive M except for the documentaries because they didn't fit...so they are on drive T with the TV shows... I will happily...

I really appreciate the thought/effort, and I will get to it soon. For the record, I won't want to test anything until the array finishes rebuilding. 5 days so far and it's at 48%.

I don't know what the CPU cost would be for resizing files on the fly, but it is likely worthwhile to only cache the popular ones in every size. I keep my images as close to the 10MB/image limit as possible and currently have 590 images uploaded.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

700k is plenty for Vonage. It matters more what else you are doing at the time. If you are gaming online or downloading stuff on Bittorrent, it really doesn't matter how much bandwidth you have. If you are just surfing around, it also doesn't matter how much bandwidth you have.

The mentioned something about it being on the CD, but I haven't looked yet. Work has been really crazy lately. Sorry.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

There is a governor on the modem, the question is whether it is set above what your cable supports or not.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

Very likely. I've heard they prosecute that stuff rather thoroughly. Plus, if the cabling sucks, I doubt the modem is capping anything.

For as long as I've been looking (about 30 minutes), Flickr has been averaging 6000+ pictures uploaded per minute. Taking the broad leap that this is an actual average, and a broader leap that the average filesize is about 4MB, that means that their download speed is at least 400MB/s...sweet.

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

The most fundamental difference between DSL and cable: Cable is one large pipe for you and all your neighbors, DSL is a smaller pipe just for you. Typically this doesn't matter because the local pipe is big enough and the ISP is oversold on bandwidth anyway. That doesn't seem to be the case...

Lag time on cable, vs. ADSL

If you haven't made changes to your system, you likely aren't the issue. As Blake and Bozo said, the biggest differences are the webservers and the ISP itself. The tech (DSL/Cable/whatever) makes very little difference for simple surfing. Even a $500/mo T-1 gives timeouts if the 'net in general...

Ideas for reducing PC power consumption

Ideas for reducing PC power consumption

The fans would be good for 3-4 watts, not really worth the risk. The biggest improvement would be to replace all those drives with 1 or 2 drives, bonus points for using 2x500GB 2.5" in RAID-1 for data protection. That would save you a whole lot. Paying for itself? I don't think so.

Newer external drives are using eSATA instead of USB or Firewire. Seems the native interface is faster. If it was a standard SATA plug, I would hope there is a power adapter to go with it, that would be useful when doing data recovery.

MAC and PC common storage help
