Sorry. To me, workstation simply means that it is part of a larger network. Therefore a large hard drive (or even an optical drive in most cases) aren't needed. If higher-performance is needed, I typically specify what applications are the focus, so specialization can happen.

I'm sorry, I failed to be specific enough. All my corporate clients are looking for cheap boxes to stick at their employees desks. No-one is really willing to pay more than a cheapo dell. The objective is to demonstrate that cost savings due to better efficiency can be had without a larger...

So you are talking about the AC-DC brick? The AC cord that connects to the brick that they offer? Because any 12V AC-DC brick (with sufficient capacity) will work just fine. Any radio shack or online electronics store can provide a replacement.

    Intel SSD's in the works?

I thought that one of the big things on SSDs is that random reads/writes aren't significantly slower than sequential?

I don't see how changing form-factor decreases power consumption. But it does increase price significantly. The idea is to stick with standard parts, as maintenance of a fleet of these will be an ongoing concern.

Exposure times were already nearing 30s, and I didn't trust the wind or my tripod to keep everything under control. Thinking back, long exposure noise reduction was working when I started, but stopped about halfway through the night. That looks to be it, the noise is much better on this one...

Proprietary? Where did you see that? It will use any 12v supply with a barrel connector, which is 99% of them. I've powered it directly from a car battery, or my car for that matter.

I'm getting more noise than I expected in long exposures @ ISO400. I was doing long exposure HDR stuff and the noise got really bad. This is three shots: ISO400 f8 4, 15, and 30 seconds Combining the images did help with the noise, as did Noise Ninja, but it is still clearly visible in the...

    Putting together a compensation package...

Tempting, but that half-mile is going over a 700'+ tall hill. Plus there would be ~30 miles a day worth of driving on the job (different sites, house calls, etc).

    Which Car?

I've always wondered about that. If the engine is doing basically the same amount of work, how much efficiency do you have to lose by having more potential for work. What about electric motors?

    Which Car?

My concern with the 4-speed isn't MPG but the noise associated with high RPM at high speed. My current car has that issue, the noise at 5000RPM for an hour becomes very tiring.

    Which Car?

I'm very close to a Subaru as my next vehicle. The only downside is a 4-speed automatic (I thought only the American's still used those) and a SO who can't (won't) drive stick.

    Putting together a compensation package...

The biggest perk for me (if all things go well) is a 0.5 mi commute from the house I hope to buy. Hours will be staggered, but living so close will make things easier. I'm going to make sure it is an exempt position, and they know that many things can only be performed before or after hours, so...

    Putting together a compensation package...

I will be moving more than 50mi, but it is just my regular commute. I'm tempted to avoid one-time compensation, as I plan to be there a long time and would rather negotiate things that will pay off more over time. We have the money to handle the simple things now.

    Putting together a compensation package...

Typically at this level they ask you what you have in mind. I used to work with a technical recruiting company, and we had people putting together crazy things (motorcycles, golf club memberships, etc). Though I may put a house in the package, as a sign to him that I'm committed long-term.

It is a client I've been supporting for quite some time. A few of my clients have grown to the point where they needed internal support. Putting together a compensation package...

It's a medium-sized company (400 employees), so I would be a one-man-band, though executive-level decision making and paperwork would be involved. I've been asked to put together a compensation package by a potential full-time employer. Besides the usual salary, insurance, 401K, and profit sharing, what should I be looking at? Thinkpad, worth the upgrade?

For my purposes, I don't care about the weight or the battery life. It would constantly be plugged in at home, the office, or my car. Being able to do some serious post-processing on the road would be awesome. It would help me avoid issues like this.

I sit about 24" away from my 42". I use it as a computer monitor, so the whole thing doesn't need to be in view at the same time. I treat it as multiple monitors, with different windows tiled across the space. If I could have a wall of desktop at 3840x2160 I would take it.
