A couple time in the last few years I have suggested my clients get custom software. All I do it quote a ballpark price (last one was $300-500k) and offer to bring in a developer. I work with them as a project manager, but mostly stay out of the way.

We have a number of items that go in the field (it is a construction company). Because of this these tags will be embedded aluminum with some ridiculous adhesive. They have to be that big because it has been decided that they need to include "Property of..." and our phone number, as well as the...

    US vs. Japan

I spend about 200 minutes a day commuting. It was always meant to be temporary; just until we found out if the relationship would work, and one of us could get a different job. It's been nearly 2 years now, and I drove ~78,000 miles last year (and am on track to beat that this year). This is not...

The first thing I would do is stick it to the dick. Get one (or more) of those Intel SSDs and the fastest CPU you can get your hands on (IIRC, ACT isn't appreciably multithreaded) and see what that does.

I'm not a fan of wireless keyboards and mice either, but it is what it is. I do plan on tagging computers, monitors, and printers. Cell phones, cellular modems and PDAs are also part of my deal, but I'm not sure how to tag them (the tag is 3/4" x 2").

Does anyone have an opinion or recommendation about asset tags? How about a minimum value? LCD monitors are getting cheap enough that to track them would be a low threshold, but I don't want to be tracking wireless keyboards and mice...

JTR, Living off-grid is a long-term goal, if it is less than 10 years out I would be surprised. We won't be in a position to buy for another year or so, and then the dream house is next in line. By then I may be using hydrogen storage instead of batteries; that way I can power the car, too...

Too much draw? Not enough batteries in the world? IMHO, propane isn't really off grid, it just means the grid comes to you monthly. When I think off grid, I think actually producing enough energy to handle consumption.

I'm thinking electric everything. The temporary house that we are moving into has an electric, and my long-term plan is to go off-grid in the house I will build. Generating electricity is easier then generating gas*. *Of acceptable quality and quantity...I can smell the jokes coming already...

Thanks for the advice, all. It really is helpful. That is what I'm noticing. Washing machine example: Bosch 500 Plus WFMC530CUC - $999 Kenmore Elite HE5t Steam - $1699 Same features, but the Kenmore is 10% larger. Fridges with the same feature sets are anywhere from $73-$350 / cu.ft. I...

Most people will charge at night, and electricity consumption is lowest at night. Having the car charger start up at 3AM would be easy to do. I already spoke to the apartment manager here, and she voiced interest in installing outlets in the carports (for a fee, of course).

I read somewhere that the weight savings put into the Tahoe Hybrid (in order to fit the motors and batteries) could have caused the efficiency increase on it's own. Instead, they but them in, just so they could make up for themselves. Stupid.

SSDs - State of the Product?

That is why this particular device taps directly into the PCI-E slot, bypassing the slower interfaces. They also aren't really selling with access time or STR in mind, but with number of IOPS available. I still don't think they will be getting anywhere that the commodity stuff won't very soon.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I agree, but my point is that this technology will not be the super-high performance for long enough. The commodity storage is increasing in performance so quickly, that this will be overshadowed long before it is profitable. OT: Sweet, this is post #111111
