    "Win-printers" (the new Win-modems?)

Thanks Howell, it stated PCL6 somewhere I looked and I assumed I was safe. GRRR!

Ugh...do you know of any indication on the box or marketing info of printers that would indicate one way or another?

Best process to convert DVDs to video files

To be honest I don't know. My soundcard encodes everything to DD before my receiver gets it, and it is 5.1. I haven't payed any attention since it just works.

    "Win-printers" (the new Win-modems?)

We have an accounting program with a really out-dated back-end. Some reports need to be sent to a network printer directly from the unix/dos-based server. Apparently, the SAMSUNG CLP Series CLP-315W I recently purchased doesn't support that, even though it is PCL6 compliant. According to the...

Best process to convert DVDs to video files

I still use RipIt4Me as a front-end for DVDDecrypter, then I encode using AutoGK as a front-end for the various tools it needs to output XviD. It will preserve DD and DTS streams if you like, I convert to 5.1 MP3 with a target file size of 2GB per movie. That is plenty to not lose quality.

    Something Random

The only deer issue was when one ran into me. I was enjoying a spirited drive down a country road at night, and saw the deer in time to stop. The thing didn't move, and was right in my lane, so I slowly drove around it. Just as my window was passing the deer, it bolted straight into my window...

End of the World As We Know It

Anyone here listen to Marketplace on NPR? They had an interesting and not groundbreaking concept the other day. That those who are older want the govt to do whatever it takes to save some of what is there now, and younger people are willing to watch it take a massive hit now, so long as it...

    The Palin Problem

I'm not saying that there aren't any intelligent people in the south/southwest; the odds against that are quite low. I'm just saying that they are in sufficiently short supply to create a very strong stereotype.

    The Palin Problem

I figured ;) He's from Texas, and not a part of Texas that is known for intelligence, if there were such a part. In fact, none of the states that border Texas are known for their intelligence.

Tannin, I would agree with you, that he is so eloquent that he makes it even more obvious that he doesn't actually know anything, but the accent ruins it completely. He just sounds clueless.

That is the new version. I'm using the last, and it doesn't support output to .hdr or .exr That is one of the reasons I'm looking to buy the new version. After giving Photoshop all night to chew, it seems to have came up with a good result. Just under 1GP @ 32BPP; I told it to save and then...

    dSLR thread

Nope. It doesn't like the 32-bit part. It just spit out a highly underexposed 16-bit TIFF. Time to try the Photomerge function in CS3. Shame it doesn't give the same kinds of controls. If that doesn't work, I'll have to try doing the tone mapping to the individual images before the stitch, which...

I've already used Photomatix to convert the 388 RAW files into 96 radiance (.hdr) images - it's batch mode is great, as it the ability for it to crop any edges that didn't include all the exposures. Intel SSD's in the works?

I now have a RAID-0 of 3 1st Gen SSDs and a RAID-0 of 3 VelociRaptors. In real world photo editing stuff, the 10k disks win hands down. Within the month I'll order the X25s, and by the end of the year I'll have some FusionIO cards (tricky to RAID them, how many PCI-E slots do you have?

    Large Array?

    Large Array?

The OS is the limiting factor. You cannot have an NTFS partiton greater than 2TB in XP. Server 2003 and Vista both support GPT disks, which can get much larger (my main array is ~10TB now, with a single drive letter).

Disappearing partition and partition for speed

Forcing the swap file to be further from the OS than necessary causes more head movement. They way to avoid swap file fragmentation is to make it a fixed size.
