We've had some birds nesting above the entryway at the office. I've been taking pictures of them that can be found here, if you are interested. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ddrueding/tags/officebirds/

    Centralizing home storage...thoughts?

That's how I did mine, but I used a larger sample (to minimize human error). 40.1GB in 203 seconds = 197MB/s

I get 197MB/s over SATA, from one drive to another. ;)

    Suggestions for changes/enhancements to storageforum

I'm thoroughly happy with it. The only thing I can think of is some sort of real-time updating within the page (like Slashdot is currently working on) that would eliminate the need to refresh periodically (possibly saving bandwidth). Considering Slashdot can't even get it right, and the piddly...

Oh, they are. When we lived in Palo Alto, they were a mile walk away. The prices, however, were truly outrageous. I've never been raped so hard by someone so happy and helpful to do it. It is also where I spotted my first Tesla Roadster. I did play with the Gitzos when I was there (they do have...

I've run a hundred times more IDE/SATA drives than I have SCSI drives, and had about the same percentage fail. Calling SATA "so flaky" would be an overstatement.

I knwo several public school teachers, and this is exactly what happens here as well. One teaches in Salinas and has said her class shrinks by a third for half the school year. Then they get back just in time for the testing that these scores are derived from.

SSDs - State of the Product?

There will be more decent brands as vendors figure it out. The issue is that only 2 companies make good drive controllers at the moment. Once More companies make the controller chips, the price on that will come down, and the other vendors will start to make use of them.

I wouldn't, because I don't know the insides of FreeNAS or Linux. If I knew Linux half as well as I knew windows, I would use it.

How do I turn this system into a HTPC?

I think all the others mentioned are cheaper. The PS3 Bluetooth looks like a fine idea. There really is no substitute for the Linksys Bluetooth adapter if you want long range, it blows everything else away.

    Netbook for the wife

That is very interesting. I would certainly choose to run LiPo most of the time (lighter and more life), having a AA fail-over option would be sweet. I have my primary storage local on my primary system, just faster that way. I then have it backing up to my other system. It isn't as non-standard as you might think. It takes standard mini-ITX motherboards (with standard backplates), standard laptop opticals, standard 2.5" HDDs, and will run either the power supply that is in it, or a picoPSU. Even the headers for the front USB are standard. I haven't seen a...

Kali 'disposal' tax? WTH is this?

Because blue states are typically the better places to live, which is why their average IQ is higher, which is why they are blue. These places are also more expensive, which is why people are leaving in a down economy.

If you get a good SSD (Intel, OCZ Vertex, re-brands of either), then nothing is required. I haven't done any trickery with my machine. Those tricks are mainly for making sucky SSDs suck less. I've done quite a few drive images onto SSDs without issue.
