I haven't done this, but here are my thoughts. 1. How standard is the interface to the monitor? 2. Is the power the correct voltage? 3. Are the mount points the same? If Dell sells a Inspiron 15 with the required screen, that would be the best bet.

Yup, and removing the splitter entirely. Both monitors behave consistently independently as well.

I doubt I'll have it more than 6 months, and will be able to sell the system with these bits, an optical, and a 120GB SSD for about $3500. The only reason I don't do it more often is my time.

Both monitors are LCDs, refresh rate is 60Hz at 800x600x32.

I noticed OCZ has a new version of the Vertex; the Vertex EX. Looks like faster writes mainly (210MB/s), but pretty darn expensive ($1,349 for 120GB).

Why I use XMarks and GMail. The only things I miss are my savegame files, and those aren't re-mapped (stupid programmers hard-coding stuff) most of the time anyway.

How can software tell one monitor off a VGA splitter to work and the other to not work simultaneously?

I change my documents location to "Documents" on my network share. I don't remap the rest but keep my videos/pictures/music elsewhere.

So you still need the camera wired to a computer, and you can then send it to an iPhone? I can do that with RDC already. If it was a piece of hardware that let me control the camera directly from an iPod touch, we'd really be in business. ($200? $350?)

Oh, I forgot to mention, 800x600x32. I can't see how software could tell which monitor is connected, because it works with one and not the other, no matter how many times I switch them around.

Not a chance, Stereodude. The mfgrs. will stop running ads for big trucks, and stop marketing SUVs as mandatory if you love your kid, but they will still be there. They may even put some margin back in the big car market, while running ads for small cars and talking them up a bit. But they won't...

Correct. The monitor on the wall always works and the monitor near the computer always goes black. Same behavior with the VGA splitter or with only one of the monitors attached directly to the card. I did fiddle with it a bit, and the card is very securely set in the board.

Changing the video card would be difficult, as this is a video surveillance appliance running XP embedded. The monitor that I swapped out that now doesn't work used to sit on my desk and never had any issues til now.

Yup, and the monitor stays on, and shows that it is getting a signal. Every time I disconnect/reconnect the VGA or turn off/on the monitor, the image is flawless for (just timed it) 2/3rds of a second.

Looking just at games, I don't see them going massively multi-threaded anytime soon. That and going i7 in a Shuttle increases price significantly.

Considering I was putting it all in a Shuttle SFF chassis, I wanted as little heat as possible. I even went so far as to slightly undervolt the CPU. I'm looking into doing the same with the GPU right now.

I have had drives fail due to heat in aluminum fanless enclosures. Make sure there is a good thermal interface between the drive and the case.
