I generally recall them being accurate, but keep in mind that it is just a single point on the controller board that is being measured. Is there a piece of tape on the sensor? I typically trust the feel of the drives more than the sensor readout anyway. Worst-case, just break out an IR thermometer.

You may need to reactivate every time. The NIC MAC and CPU ID are some of the things that are checked, and they will be different.

That is a heck of a scam; buy some 920s, swap out the real part for a fake, return it for a refund. Newegg re-stocks it and sells it again without ever looking.

There are quite a few monitors out there that say 120Hz, but don't receive 120FPS. Instead they receive 60FPS and flash the same image twice in a row. All the displays that advertise 240Hz are 120s that do this (stupid) thing.

I don't have the acoustic stuff turned on (still at default), and I just tried turning on "Aggressive IO" to no effect.

Got it. Stuck it in an external enclosure. Connected it via eSATA. Both AnyDVD and ImgBurn are showing the same ~10MB/sec speed for Angels and Demons. Not the speed I was looking for :(

Just verified. It freaks out for about 3 seconds, then works fine.

Most laptops (and netbooks) use normal 2.5" SATA drives, and work with regular SSDs. In some laptops, someone decided that 1.8" drives would be a good idea, and that requires a smaller form factor for the connectors (the normal ones wouldn't fit).

Thanks for the vLan stuff. vMotion would be neat, but if I constantly have to deal with the complexity and performance drop attached to iSCSI, it just isn't worth it. I've already migrated everyone from standard servers to virtual machines, and then consolidated virtual machines without anyone...

:p I was planning on learning about iSCSI doing something similar, but it won't apply to the environments I like to work in. I do need to learn about vLANs, and I have quite a few 3Com managed switches to play with (some 48-port, some 24, all GbE), but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Systems that large are typically licensed, leased, or under some massive support contract. If you purchased the hardware outright, the worst they could do is pull support.

I suppose they could make it void the warranty, but it is your hardware that they sold to you. Using something in a method other than directed is my favorite.

Abbreviated too much I suppose. "Google Apps for your Domain" includes using gmail servers to host your domain e-mail accounts (along with a bunch of other stuff).

Gigabyte had already just gone ahead and provided 3x the power on USB2, so we have that covered ;)

Google Apps has made my life an order of magnitude simpler. E-mail (along with the SPAM and AV to go with it) simply require too much maintenance and specialized knowledge to be worth it for small businesses and consultants.

OCing does throw other stuff out of spec unless you have an EE CPU with an unlocked multiplier. Because of this my RAM and other settings are pretty much stock.

I would say it is the best bang/buck including dual procs and any motherboard. Most apps are still single-threaded, and some can use 2 cores. Above 4 cores is just a waste for nearly everyone for at least the next several years. There is no way you will get Merc's level of per-core horsepower...

Not really any point in more RAM unless he plans on doing all those things at once. Current generation onboard video is fine for Aero. Upgrading to an SSD (like the 40GB Intel) will provide a measurable speed increase for anyone doing anything.

ESXi is really not fussy. I've run it on all kinds of stuff, including AMD X2 3800s, i7s, Celerons, you name it. I also haven't found an SATA or GbE controller it didn't like.

Looks like a plan to me. I have had nothing but good experiences with ProCurve and Dell Servers.
