    Something Random

Kathmandu is worth a day if you're quick, two if you aren't. The pollution is enough that you won't want to stay longer, anyway. If you are looking for something exhilarating, take the bus to Pokhara; the one-lane dirt road is on an impossible cliff, and you can see the burned out carcasses of...

    Rain and flood

    1. Is that possible? Can you identify any kind of experiment that would satisfy you? Of course, small scale has already been done. ;) 2. Causation is largely irrelevant. Not planning for future temperatures to at least partially follow the trend line for existing data would be pretty silly.

    Rain and flood

Plenty could happen that would make me suspicious. How about one of these graphs looking different than the rest? How about some data that doesn't show that last year was one of the hottest, and the last decade was the hottest on record? What would it take for you to change your mind?

Because they were idiots. This is different than arguing the facts of global warming. That they took good data and made bad conclusions/decisions doesn't make it bad data.

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

I had to do a reinstall of my WHS a while ago when the OS became corrupted. I disconnected all the drives during the install, then re-connected them afterward. I don't remember all the steps exactly, but it was a happy ending.

    Rain and flood

Talk about a straw man argument. All the global warming theory I've read calls for hotter and wetter (due to increased evaporation from the increased temperature).

I flew in to Kathmandu, then took a bus to Pokara, trekked the Anapurna range (300+ miles in 30 days, no guide), and rode a motorcycle into India. The Anapurna range is the most beautiful place I have ever been in my life. While you are there, try to get to the islands south of Phuket for some...

    iPhone4 vs HTC Evo

At the end of the video in Merc's last link (which was pleasant to watch), they mention that they sell a kit including a tool to remove the proprietary screws and some 00 philips replacements.

    Lenovo Thinkpads

I haven't run into a small laptop that was. Actually the Acer netbooks did alright in the field. I think it was because they were light enough that there wasn't much force behind any impacts.

    SSD question

If you have enough RAM (and at these prices, it's silly not to), then there isn't much point worrying about page files. All my laptops have 8GB, and the workstations are 16GB or 24GB.

I have a top-end X201 coming. It is probably as small as you can get and still have decent power. They project that I will receive the unit on the 4th of Feb after ordering it on the 13th of this month. More than two weeks? Is this the 20th century?

    low-end laser printers these days?

The Samsung printers I have work great until service is needed, trek they are a write-off. The HPs are more expensive and no better until out comes timer for a service. I suppose it depends on whether you mind throwing out whole printers or not.

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

This really isn't a productivity station. This is where we pass the time. Watching what is going on outside is as significant as whatever is on the monitor. If we are going to work hard, the blinds are blackout with a white interior, so the "ideal" is available as well.
