    Why am I the magnet...

I wish that were the case. Actually, speaking of eBay, I recently bought a new modem via there to catch up on the times. Per chance, the person whose auction I won lives in south San Jose; so, I proposed an in-person meeting to swap cash for the modem. The guy comes back that he's leaving...

Win XP compatibility with 16-bit programs

Basically, compatability is bizarre. Some programs that work in Win9x and 2000, won't work on XP, even in compatability mode. Programs that work in 2000, but not Win9x, work in XP only in a Win9x compatability mode.

    No Spin-Up

One of my ATA drives very suddenly does not spin-up or apparently power-up at all. Beyond poking it with a stick, repeatedly plugging a molex connector into it, and exhorting it to work, is there anything that I might do to revive it, if only long enough to get the data off of it?

The problem with image mounting tools, is that game makers are constantly trying to make them unuseful (for good reason, of course). You may find that, after an important patch, your mounted image no longer will allow the game to start.

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

Actually, you're probably already violating licenses. This is from EA's boilerplate license: It goes on to say: You need to get appropriate commercial licenses from EA in order to "rent" the games. Presumably, these cost more -- but would likely leave you free to implement this server system.

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

Perhaps we should question why you're spending $6,000 on licensing <$50 a pop games. I'd also like to know if your licenses would *allow* you to do what you're planning. Last I checked, it's one copy on one machine; nothing about copies on servers, for any purpose.
