Best Present for 1st time builder

Well maybe help with the case but as others posted it's a personal decision like monitors for the look. Donate one of your old HD's and a DVD burner, I'm guessing you have those laying around?

    Firefox 3 beta

Hmm, that multiple tab performance is just the reverse of my experience. I only have a couple addons but I found that FF3 is way faster with multiple tabs than FF2 was. I typically have less than say twelve tabs and more than five open at a time. I do have to make use of the undo close though...

    Quad output video

So that's nine monitors arranged in a square for a big 153" screen plus one for the break room right? I'm thinking about getting on of the 40 something aquos's but the whole HDDVD/bluecrap war took most of my home theater interest and flushed it. Still I eventually want something bigger for...

Nice. Such a shame really, I remember going there in the mid 90's for reliable info.

    Server 2008 free

Thanks. Actually I am damn impressed. Never used VMware before and it took a while to figure out the install VMware tools to get drivers but after that it was just easy. Fast too, server 2008 the eval link above anyway, installs very quick. I think I had desktop in under 10 minutes. Didn't...

    Server 2008 free

Question: Is there a free or trial virtulization software that this will work under? I want to give server 2008 a try with our software to determine if it works or not (not just take mfg's "it should work") but don't want to dedicate a machine multiple boot etc to try it. Edit: looks like...

Using 38" Sony LCD TV as main monitor?

I have thought about this a couple times and I am on the edge myself. Something 30-35" with 1920x1080 sounds pretty good until I compare it with the virtual space I already have at 1600x1200 on TWO monitors. Just not ready to spend that much plus take a hit on virtual space but give me another...

    Antivirus/Antispyware tools

Well I am still using AVG free and an occasional run of Spybot and Ad-Aware free for a total package that I think is decent while costs nothing. Best defense has to be knowing what not to do out there though, I simply don't run into trouble anymore. If I paid money it would probably be NOD32...

    XP SP3: What's The Word?

Symantic/Norton had a big mess with corrupted registry stuff something or other so I heard. Had to apply a patch before you did SP3, course you only find out about it after. Personally I had zero issues so far on personal machines but still holding off on the corporate machine as we use...

    Intel ICH8/9/10R, and RAID 1+0

Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 ICH8R, running a couple Seagate 750GB drives pretty much flawless except a crash and improper shutdown kicked off a rebuild, which completed no problem. No experience with 0 or 0+1 on it though.

Going mobile: service provider, hardware complete package?

Don't exactly know where you are headed for this? Well for a broadband setup you will need a wireless router and a card in the desktops, the notebook I would assume should be all set. For a cellular solution you would need bluetooth in the phone and you can connect the laptop to the phone via...

    Amazing hard drive story

Aren't they still using a hardened 386 for the shuttle flight computer? As this is just an experiment they get allowed to use the "newer" stuff, heh. Still I am impressed, that heat, violent breakup and landing could possibly be the worst treatment a drive has withstood.

"Cheap" system with 64 bit / 66Mhz PCI slots?

Coming in close to zero seems like a victory till you look at that number that was bled off you during the whole year. I am all for withholding to get killed, if people get a wake up call by being presented a bill at the end of the year we will be in full out revolt mode. But then again there...

Monster Cable = Scumbags put in their place

Just read the whole reply letter. Takes a certain type of writing style I just don't posses to come up with something like that but it's a good read. Monster won't even reply to him I bet, he could grab medias eye with this one easily.

    Trouble Ticket management software/service?

All I can say is the system we use is a pile of S and needs to go. Been around for over 15 years now, was based on a AS400 and to this day we still have to access it through a "green screen" AS400 emulator (personal communications AS400 client express anyone?) to reach all the higher functions...

Yes it was. To high? Make an offer, its just sitting here in the box doing nothing... I have been traveling so much recently I was supposed to put it on ebay long before now. Funny how stuff like that just slides, I have a ton of stuff here I need to sell.

    DVI KVM switches, any progress?

Happy to report that the Aten CS1762 works perfectly fine. This is a DVI/USB/audio controller. There are some odd quirks that I don't think are related to this device though. -When powering on a computer the switch MUST be switched to that computer, if you don't it will start up at the adapter...

I need a plain DVI two workstation switch. Because of the nightmares I have had with USB mice and keyboards with KVM's I want to stay PS/2 because it just works (even in DOS, go figure). I see a slew of options on the egg, very different than a year ago when I looked last. I even see an ATEN...

    Speed of a 2.5" 7200 rpm drive

Yeah for the laptops I have had more memory and a 7200rpm hard drive makes them much more snappy. I have had the seagate 60gig 7200rpm drive in like three laptops now, fairly happy with it.

I used MS Intellimice for years. A year or so ago I switched to a Logitech G5 and it's pretty nice. I really like its ability to change resolution on the fly so if you have to do something accurate you can crank the speed way down quick and get back to normal at the touch of a button.

They aren't crap compared to what you are sending in. Seagate will send you anything and everything to get the claim done with, even a newer / bigger drive. I sent in a 300g and got back a 400g new drive as far as I could tell. All depends on what they have at the time.
