I currently have a made-by ATi x850 XT, and I've never had an overhearing problem, even with the stock fan. I replaced that with an Arctic Cooling ATi Silencer for noise reduction purposes. If you think temperatures are a problem, have you been checking them?

CPU and GPU cores *will* end up together on the same piece of silicon; so, if a little tweaking allows you to use the GPU core as a super-nasty coprocessor, I figure that'd fly pretty far.

SMAC had the advantages of being built on the same engine as Civ3 and an unusually long development cycle, so they had a lot of development time. That made for a much better game out of the box. I'm not much on micromanagement, which makes the SMAC governors extremely useful.

I think this is exactly the issue. You're only going to teach them how to use your printer, which they'll never, ever buy. They're going to get that $60 jobby to which you referred. And it's not as if you have to stock a bunch of ink because the printers aren't going to last that long. Heck...

This is really a comment more on your system than the codec. If you bog any computer down enough, the operating system will go to hell, too. FLAC doesn't really take remarkably more processing power to decode than something like MP3, but the bitrates are much higher.
