    Whither the Art of Negotiation?

So basically, people are lazy? If that's the case, why do these people bother to contact me? They should see the asking price, see it's not what they want, and move on. I could deal with that. Instead I get exchanges like this: Them: How low will you go on this? Me: I'm asking $x. Do you...

Odd Problem with Processor Power Management

I recently upgraded the motherboard on my main computer, which allows me to finally take advantage of the PowerNow feature on my Opterons. I have duly set the power scheme in Windows to "minimal power management," and now the AMD power monitor shows the processors going to the one and only...

    Whither the Art of Negotiation?

Why doesn't anyone seem to know how to negotiate anymore? I listed up a bunch of stuff on Craiglist that I don't need, and I'm getting a lot of "what's your lowest price on this?" responses. At least the low-ballers have a position from which to haggle. I even state in some of the listings...

    How far do you go?

This is some kind of stupid American work ethic, right? I mean, if they don't pay for the work, it doesn't get done, and stuff explodes, how can you be to blame? All that's going to happen is that they expect more work for free. Isn't illegal to work for free?

    End of TV :(

Just get DSL. AT&T has more less come out and said that P2P isn't worth worrying about. What they foresee eating most of their bandwidth is streaming media. And, I guess, they're building out their network to deal with it. Comcast is cutting corners.

Well, you can be fifteen and compete. But you have to turn 16 the year of the competition. The problem with the Chinese gymnasts is that there's pretty good evidence that they're younger than their passports say. And, to be honest, when a little fudging of Chew Gum's age will get the whole...

    SAN alternative

One might think that this would be easier to implement with SAS drives, since they're dual-ported. I'd be more worried about coherency, since it sounds to me like each server would mount the file system independently. Recipe for data disaster.

File Area Networking (FAN) - Data storage solutions

It's a bunch of bullshit, as far as I can tell. It's a distributed file system or network file system with certain attributes, i.e., nothing new. One could implement DFS or AFS, for example, but that seems awfully complicated for the sole purpose of making an apparently uniform interface...

    TWC RoadRunner Speed Boost?

The issue is: People Are Stupid(tm) When AT&T rolled out U-verse here, their regular prices were competitive with Comcast's promo rates. So Comcast lowered their promo rates and increased their regular rates. Folks get drawn in by the lower initial rate, but don't follow-up on it. Also...

One caveat with the discount coupon that I received is that I can't return the items individually. I have to return the entire ticket for any money back. Since I doubt that they'd take the lamps back after I opened the blister packs anyway, it's not much of a barrier for me.

Well, regular phone wiring does not imply that it's not digital. Most systems allow you to plug the magical box right into your phone wall socket, making the phone available throughout the house. To be honest, it would be a bit silly for them to string another wire out to your house just for...
