    Hacking WiFi

I have a client with a laptop with Broadcom-based wireless that needs to be able to use channels higher than 11 while traveling. In the past, all I've needed to do is hack the driver or firmware to convince it that it was in the Japan or UK. However, I've never done this with a Broadcom chip...

    Windows 7 nonsense

You don't need all that crap. It just goes out of date anyway. Just slip in the update pack, the browser pack of your choice, WiMP if you really feel the need, and your drivers. Slim down with nLite if it suites you. That's it.

    Backplane-Compatible 2.5" to 3.5" Mounting Adapters

I have a friend that I was helping to repurpose some equipment. I had mentioned using 2.5" disks for cooling and noise considerations, but the drives are mounted using a bracket, not any kind of sled or caddy. Otherwise, the tape idea might do.

    Backplane-Compatible 2.5" to 3.5" Mounting Adapters

Most 2.5" to 3.5" drive mounting adapters leave the connectors in the middle, which means that you can't use them with a backplane. I found this from IcyDock, but it only has air vents on the front and back, and there are a number of complaints with its tool-less design. Does anyone know of...

    Decent wireless setup???$$$$?

How distinctive is this? I've been using the same WRT54G for some years. And the only reason that I stopped using the Belkin that I had before that is that Belkin offered to give me a refund for sending it back.

    >500GB Drives

The funny thing is that these are not coming from the same people. SSDs and spinning disks aren't just competing technologies, they're coming from different companies -- many of which weren't previously competitors. If we can get past the form-factor change from 3.5 to 2.5, then SSDs should...

    Thinkpad Taking Forever to Boot

Strictly speaking, I don't think that more than two (one being a boot-time run for system files) was truly necessary. However, each boot/defrag cycle more precisely arranges the files needed for startup. It also makes the block display look nice. I'm not sure how it got so out of whack, but...

Kali 'disposal' tax? WTH is this?

Actually, it's all about parties. The Republicans here are so far out of the mainstream that they dismissed one of their leaders for *dealing* with the Democrats, i.e., trying to take care of the state's business. If one or the other party was clearly in charge, we'd have a fiscal policy that...

The problem in California is the Republicans. They're way too right wing to be a serious force here, but there are just enough of them to muck up anything sensical which Democrats might try to do. So, we end up with a lot of crap. On top of that, a lot of misguided Republicans unable to get...
