Video card for mid-range business systems

Is there any discernable difference in capture quality between the 8500 and 9700? Also, by any chance have you tried the component video out adapter on either card?

    eBooks & eLibraries

I spend almost all day in front of a monitor, and while it normally doesn't bother my eyes, it simply doesn't compare to paper. Reading short articles is fine on a monitor, but when reading something book-length, I would much rather prefer it on paper. Steve

Friends problem PC... magic pixie dust strikes again.

By any chance, is it directly above a furnace or central air unit? I've seen a PC that had spontaneous reboots be fixed by simply moving it across the room to the side opposite where the furnace was in the basement. It's even still on the same circuit as it was previously, and now runs...

Where not to live in the US

It could be. I generally don't follow the news in Newark as it's just too depressing. The population has been steadily declining there since the race riots in '68. It also has some of the worst schools in the country. In some, as few as 15% can even pass the basic skills tests. Patterson isn't...

Where not to live in the US

Great, I live in the second most expensive part of the country. That's no real surprise, since everything is so damn expensive. I actually live in Essex county, just bordering Passaic county, but it's still the same. The only reason my county isn't included is because of Newark, which is...

Video card for mid-range business systems

TMPGEnc Plus works! The free version is supposed to have MPEG2 functionality for 30 days, but it never worked on any of my files, which is why I didn't try the Plus version before now. Finally, I can edit the all of captures I have. Just in time too, as I'm running out of disk space. Steve

Video card for mid-range business systems

I have the same problem with my BT8x8 card. If I captue in MPEG2 with PowerVCR (the program it came with), I can't edit it in any program I've tried. I've also tried capturing with WinDVR in MPEG2, and it does the same thing. Only capturing with MPEG1 or HuffyUV can I produce files that I can...

BMW Z4, like it or not?

I like it, but after having a 2-seater with a very small trunk (Mazda RX-7), I wouldn't get another one unless it was a second car. It's such a hastle if I ever want to carry something in my car that's bigger than a duffel bag.

    Digital Audio Question

Home entertainment systems are not my forté, so this is probably a stupid question. I just got digital cable, and the digital audio out on the cable box is an RCA connector, while on my receiver, it's a Toslink. I can't seem to find any Toslink-RCA cables anywhere, and I was wondering if they...

article by Woody Harrelson; his take on Iraq & war.

Hollywood's portrayal of America is very different from most American's actual experience. For example, from watching police shows, one would get the impression that every cop uses their guns weekly. In reality, 98% of NYPD officers never fire their guns in the line of duty in their entire...

How do you get rid of the stupid Macromedia Flash pop-up?

I was reading the Phoenix discussion board last night, and came across this post which describes how to block plugins in Mozilla and Phoenix. Unfortunately, it only works after the page is loaded, but it's better than nothing. BTW, I'm using last night's build of Phoenix, and it's improved...

    Your pets, and mine.

When I was growing up, every Spring and Fall, a pair of Malard ducks (a male and female) would stay in our in-ground pool for about a month. There's nothing better than the IBM Model M Keyboards. They have by far the best feel, and are indestructable. As far as the International characters, I do what LiamC said in the other thread. I use the ALT+Keypad combo. It's not too hard to remember the 8 that I need for Spanish: ALT+0161 = ¡...

    Sampo LCD Monitors

Does anyone have any experience with Sampo LCD monitors, specifically the LME-17S1? It's a 17.4" model with built-in TV tuner and 1280x1024 resolution. My Dad wants to get an LCD monitor, and this one is currently US$600 at Costco. The specs seem pretty good for the price, but I don't know about...

    Which Linux Disto (yet again)

I would say either Mandrake or Redhat. However, they're still not quite there yet. Mandrake 9.0 still has some rough edges since it's a .0 release, but on the whole I haven't had any major problems with it. The hardware detection is very good, and Samba and printing just work. Evolution...

    Clawhammer not 'til 2H03!

I found this article at ExtremeTech which says: On Thursday, an AMD spokeswoman said that only the company's product strategy had shifted, not the company's production timetable. Officially, samples of the 64-bit Athlon desktop processor are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2003, with...

    Clawhammer not 'til 2H03!

In the revised article, they specifically said the Clawhammer would be out towards the end of Q1, and the Opteron in the 1st half. Now, I don't know if these will be paper launches, or if you'll actually be able to buy them at that time.

    Clawhammer not 'til 2H03!

According to The Inquirer, AMD said it's delaying the Clawhammer (desktop) until the second half of next year. The Sledgehammer (server) is still scheduled for the 1st half however. How much is this going to hurt them, and will it give Intel a big advantage? Steve
