    Special IDE cable requirements.

You've heard it before because it's true. :) And yes, I'm sure your hard disk drive and DVD-RW drive are very capable, late-model devices. But your IDE controller is what most all of us have for an IDE controller ... a rehash of a very old device. How long has the plain IDE interface in one...

    Special IDE cable requirements.

To even have a chance at decent performance you only want one device per IDE channel anyway (and forgive me if that's old news to you but I haven't seen you here before ... hi, by the way). I think Promise is the oft-recommended basic option for ATA controller cards (someone? anyone?) these...

Ugh. They have a business version. Mercutio, I actually feel the same way as you do about Western Digital. However, that has not stopped me from being tempted by ridiculously large, on sale, WD hard disks. I'm happy to say I've never given in to that temptation, but there it is. And now...

    Internet service alternatives

(And yes, I do use a unique English-based alphabet with 27 letters. ) Basically I want something closer to real Internet access. Something like what I used to have back in university: a real IP address, reliable connectivity and transfer rates in both directions, and no stupid...

    Internet service alternatives

Being in the downtown core of a large city, I might easily be. But without even checking, I'll guess that Verizon would: a) be overpriced, and b) cap bandwidth usage, and c) ooze with fascist restrictions as to what kind of things I can do with the service I'm paying for (e.g. no servers)...

Well, call me crazy. I've decided to go with Speakeasy's 768Kbps SDSL package, probably with their VoIP service just to give it a try. Unfortunately, the rep I'm apparently supposed to deal with (that part is irritating -- I guess the sales staff are on commission) is on vacation until next...

It doesn't matter. Any electric lawnmower should be powerful enough to chop through its own electrical cord, whether it's 12, 14, or 16 gauge wiring. I know this from years of experience.

Points #1 and #3 don't bother me much. Hey, these people are making my day everytime I sit down at my computer and find myself at a beautifully stable operating system that was a snap to install, that cost me absolutely nothing, has dead-easy access to virtually any software package I'd be...

Handruin, no I haven't tried any of the beta releases of FC 4. I was impressed with FC 3 though. But I still prefer Debian, which coincidentally is going to try and release their next major version (Sarge) on May 30th.

    Internet service alternatives

I think I'm at the point where standard DSL and cable internet service is just too limiting. I'd like something closer to "real" internet access -- no download/upload caps, no port blocking, and a real world-facing IP address (something I don't have now with this crazy service). A T1 is way...

I have a simple Kyocera cell phone (the model number wore off ages ago). I bought it a little over 2 years ago for about $80. Service and my usage level costs me just $6.67 a month. I've never had any complaints about customer service (the whole 1 time I needed to call them). Beyond that...

Torrents - do we even need TV any more?

You did work to gain the money that you used to buy the music online, right? That's all that money is about - a method for shuffling effort around in a convenient, minted form. If you handed over money for that item, then you handed over effort. Although I do agree, I value something more...

This a very long article, but I found it a good story. The first few pages really just set the groundwork. I found the 5th page to be the most thought-provoking. If you suffered through boredom a lot when you were younger - or perhaps if you are these days - you might find it interesting.

I care. And I'll try to explain why, because I do have a personal reason, i.e. a reason that governs my behaviour. Not yours. It has absolutely no bearing on anyone else. So I am not going to get into an argument with anyone ... this is just my perspective. People tell me I'm crazy all the...

Torrents - do we even need TV any more?

So when I go over to their home in person and watch TV with them, I'm breaking the law because I'm not the one footing the cable bill? I don't understand. I thought time-shifting was legal. If so, what is the difference between watching something at their house, or watching it the next day...

    LCD TVs

Has anyone had any experience with the Syntax "Olevia" line of LCD televisions? Syntax is apparently a newcomer to the LCD TV industry (just a year old I think). I think they predominantly use LG-Phillips displays so some might run screaming from the room right now. Their current sets look...

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

...and then of course things like this from Adaptec turn up that, as listed under "External Connectors" at "Technical Specifications" section, have the following: If Adaptec can squeeze SCSI through a 26-pin connector via a 32-bit Cardbus slot, why couldn't Toshiba have something similar...

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

You know CityK, from that spec sheet it sounds like you've got a great little laptop there. I mean, heck, it has CardBus slots! My ThinkPad doesn't have those - just the older 16bit PCMCIA slots. :( Are you sure you can't find a replacement power supply somewhere?
  48. I

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

That is how my IBM ThinkPad's connector looks. And as those 4 end pins are mounted forward of the others, they connect first, so for the electrical safety of the drive's electronics you are probably right about them being for power and ground. Take a look at the larger image pop-up at the...
  49. I

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

Are you sure about that? I have to say I'm a little doubtful because I have an IBM ThinkPad from around the same era that has an external floppy drive, with a cable that hooks up to a port exactly like what CityK describes... ...and it's definitely not a parallel port. Maybe there's an easy...

    Automated paging systems

I'm looking at this step now, and I'm swamped by the amount of stuff I'm finding! So far it's all too complicated as it all focuses on connecting complex RS-232/RS-485 devices to the serial port. Wbat I need is to figure out some way of monitoring a single switch. I'm almost considering using...
