What is it with these guys?

I prefer Coug's version: A good computer technician should be able to smash non-cooperative hardware into consecutively smaller pieces for at least two minutes. :)

    I/O plates piss me off

I think that is an excellent idea. A factory pre-installed I/O shield, spot-welded to the connectors or riveted to the motherboard would solve the problem completely. At least the size of the opening for the I/O shield is standard, right?

    Stupid Lawsuit

You boil the water. And yes, if the kettle switches off before you're ready to deal with it, you turn it back on so that you are guaranteed to be working with boiling water. But then you pour the boiling water into what's known as a teapot, which is where the teabag(s) is (are). At that point...

It took me ages to find an "Aurora" type I/O shield. I hate the inconsistency too.

    Stupid Lawsuit

I have to say I've never come across a drink hotter than McDonald's coffee. And in general, only rarely do I come across food that makes people more irritable than the majority of stuff you find at Rotten Ronald's. Any worse than that and we're bordering on illness. A side note to myself: If...

How do you remove a Pentium II CPU cooler (delicately)?

It's one I picked up as surplus years ago. I don't know if it's a retail CPU or not, but the fan was so cheap (with no RPM sensor ... the lead from the motherboard connector had been chopped off) I can't think it would have been part of a retail package. I can't figure this thing out. It's...

How do you remove a Pentium II CPU cooler (delicately)?

Hmm, yes I have a few of those types also. This one is different.

How do you remove a Pentium II CPU cooler (delicately)?

Yes, a real Slot 1 Pentium II. The currently installed CPU cooler has a dead fan, and I can't figure out how to get the heat sink off. It seems to be connected somehow via steel posts that are completely flush with the main slab of the heat sink. Any clues?

NEWZ: Seagate Releases 120GB & 100GB 2½ Inch Notebook Dr

Definitely NOT from Hypermicro. I have no energy to describe my last experience with them (~2 years ago now I guess), but it was lousy. Lunar, you suggested ZipZoomFly back in January for hard disks. Seeing as how I never go for cutting edge stuff, I don't what their selection is like, but I...

NEWZ: Seagate Releases 120GB & 100GB 2½ Inch Notebook Dr

Based on one experience last year I will never buy hard disks from Newegg again. Not ever. And given one other order-foul up, and their occasionally absurb shipping prices, I avoid them as much as I can for everything else, too.

I'd apologize for being off-topic, but given the title of this discussion I won't this time. I watched some TV last night. Anyone else see ABC's "Nightline" with ye olde Ted Koppel? I'm still a bit shaken. It's not often that, with absolutely no warning on the part of the show or the network...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

Oh, and for those of you in the United States, "Can we tape?" by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press should be informative. I suggest looking at the section titled, "tape-recording laws at a glance," first. And then be sure to read the section, "interstate phone calls". It...

This Call May Be Recorded For Quality Assurance

I've been tempted to ask the caller to hold for a moment, put the receiver down somewhere within range of my speakers, play the infamous "sally.wav" file, then mumble something into the phone about being busy, and then deliberately fumble while hanging up the handset.

    Recording Modem Wave Output

Ok, let me ask more directly: is your modem a so-called "voice modem" or a modem with "voice" capability? I can plug a 1200 baud, 8-bit ISA modem into my PC, install some badly designed audio software, and then see "modem wave driver" as an option for the record source. So I'll say it again...

    Recording Modem Wave Output

Do you not hate it when people ask negative questions?
  22. I

    Recording Modem Wave Output

Yes. If it's a "voice" modem. And if you have an audio cable running from the modem's internal audio-out pins to dedicated "Modem" input pins on your sound card. Otherwise, you'd run a standard miniplug connector cable from the external line-out or speaker jack of your voice modem over to...

    Buying 17" LCD monitors

Aren't they always though? Sure, some are less positive than others sometimes, but you'll never read "fightin' mad" reviews on newegg. Then again, if there were a lot of people unhappy with this product, there would be at least a few negative write-ups at other sites, right? I can't find...

    LCD question

It's just analog VGA (or whatever) with a different cable and connector system, isn't it? It's basically just "broken out" across 5 - or if employing "sync on green" - 4 BNC connectors. Or do I have that totally wrong?

Drakantus, you have asked at the right place. I live in Arlington, VA, and I don't own a car. And I wouldn't have it any other way. You lose one type of freedom by giving up a car, but what so many fail to realize is that you get a different type of freedom back in return. Some people find...
