I would agree with the answer given by jfeenin. Get a rifled slug barrel for your 20 gauge and use good quality sabot-slug.

Are you using a shotgun for deer because of local laws or for lack of a rifle?

I don't have the time or want to get a new barrel for that gun. I don't have a rifle to use, either.

I guess I really need to know what is the best rifled slug and what choke I should use on the barrel...

Well, here is an article that I just scanned out of one of my back issues of GT. It is a comparison of various Sabot slug brands.

I hate to say it, but I have serious doubts about you getting much accuracy with Sabot-slugs through a smooth bore. Buckshot *might* be more compatible in this regard.

I've done some research and have found that my Model 140 is mechanically compatible with the Model 1400 (more parts are out there for this model I think).

Any idea where I might look for a barrel and how much it might cost? Remember, I have a 20 ga. and not a 12 ga.

Surely someone you know has a 30-06 you can borrow. I'd be really hesitant about using something rigged up. You'll want as little pain as possible for the deer. I'd imagine meat from a distressed deer is gamey.

That said, I've never even had an offer to go hunting and my Mossberg 590 would not be up to the challenge anyway. Enjoy yourself and be safe.

My first choice would be to purchase the barrel from a local gunsmith. Just the make and model number should be sufficient to get you the barrel you need.

The largest online/mail-order source of parts and equipment is Brownells. http://www.brownells.com/index.html I am skimming through their 2002 catalog (#55) and don't see any slug barrels for your model 140. Not to say they can't get you one.

A quick online search does show the existence of a Model 140 slug barrel. Scroll down this page and you will find "1400--20 Inch,Rifled Sites--Slug Barrel--20 (gauge)--$165.00

Also check the listings on this page model 140/1400 parts. There are a few.

Unless the laws have changed, you can purchase a barrel for a firearm by mail order without the assistance of an FFL dealer.

Also, I wholeheartedly agreed with what Cliptin wrote. A hunter has the responsibility to kill a game animal quickly and cleanly with no needless suffering. Using buckshot or a rifled slug in a smooth-bore barrel is just asking for inaccuracy and the potential to nonfatally wound the animal.

A friend of mine uses a 20 gauge with slugs and they work fine on a deer. You have to be very careful when using slugs in a smoothbore barrel, if the choke is too full then the barrel could blow. Usually your instruction manual well tell you if it's not safe. Or something on the barrel. I find the Remington Copper Sabots work very well, and accurately. If there is a Dick's nearby, they should have them on sale for about $6 per box of 5.

Use an "improved cylinder" choke for slugs or sabots (the more open the better).

Oh and shoot the deer in the shoulder for best results.

Hmmm. I see it was made by Tanfoglio in Italy. Interesting. I've had this thing for so long I never really thought about who made it. My dad gave it to me as a gift on my 16th B-Day. Actually, I don't think I could 'own' it but it i was/is mine...

I don't think so. At least it doesn't say it will fit on the box. The 835 has a 3 1/2" magnum chamber.

Tanfoglio make some nice semi-autos. A friend of mine uses it in IPSC matches.
