I don't know what gear you have, but a decent handheld flash setup using current Canon equipmment would be: 580EX CP-E3 (external 330V power supply) Flash bracket (a lot of choices here, start with Stroboframe) Off-camera TTL cord Gary Fong Lightsphere (better than Lumiquest or Sto-fen options...

    Merit and Bonus

I am curious what is typical these days for the average (non-sales) employee meeting expectations in a business unit that is turning a decent profit. Lately it seems that bonuses here for middle and senior management have increased a few percent, but merit increases have dropped a little.

    Atlas 15K II

I received a 36GB Atlas 15K II, but what a disappointment it was! The Maxtor idles as noisily as an old X15-36LP or worse, and seeks are audible. It also makes a range of annoying clicks and loud tones during startup. It sounds as if there were an onboard piezo speaker. Whereas the...

"The Inner World of the Hard Drive" (chuckle)

OK. Assuming 3' platters, the edge of a 7200 rpm drive is moving at 64 mph. The edge of a similar 5400 rpm drive would be - you guessed it - 48 mpg. I wonder at the age of the source material for that article. ;)

"The Inner World of the Hard Drive" (chuckle)

I thought a 7200 rpm drive was around 75 mph. Anyway, it really doesn't matter, the article is just silly.

Format 250GB Drive As Single FAT32 Volume?

When I used Maxblast or Seagate Tools on the large ATA drive, the system was subsequently unbootable. I kept getting an error although the boot drive is SCSI.

Anyone tried the new DVD dual layers? Reports, comments?

Not yet. DL media is ridiculously expensive for mass data storage and write speeds are too slow. I'll also probably wait for a higher capacoty disc format, maybe >20GB.

Format 250GB Drive As Single FAT32 Volume?

If you find something that works, let us know. The only special apps that format drives larger than 32GB seem to use a DDO. They work fine with external enclosures, but when installed internally my computer will not boot, even though the drive is not a boot drive.

Format 250GB Drive As Single FAT32 Volume?

PM 7 will allow up to 256GB per FAT32 partition, which is more than enough. I'm still looking for FAT32 solutions for my 400GB Seagates. I bought PM 8 and was not too happy with its 196GB limitation.:(

    Hard Drive $/GB comparison

Well, I don't know about the 300GB drive, but I added a couple of PATA 7200.8 400GB drives when they were released in November. They don't seem particularly hot and are relatively quiet. One is running about 18 hours per day with about 450 cycles.

The current Fujitsu P series has the crystalview display, which is nice but very finely pitched. There is no true docking station available which makes it less than desirable for out-of-the-way home use. I have been using a Fujitsu P5K for 1.5 years. It is the only subcompact with a...

Firewire is best for hard drives - less CPU utilization and higher transfer rates even with ye olde FW400. Of course many Windows notebooks do not supply power, so USB 2 is more practical for travel.
