WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

The WD3000GLFS is about 50% faster (i.e., ~20GB script run times are 2/3) than my older 740 when ptgtemp files are constrained to the drive. However, the CPU is not near 100% so the HD is still a bottleneck. For normal destop use (mainly reads) I'm sure the kiddies will be happy enough...

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

Very few people will pay for the slightly better sound quality. BTW, there is a cure for the recorded sound complaints. Get off your ass and go to the symphony or opera! Listen to the real thing, music and vocals by human beings.

    iPhone: what's the catch???

No they are not. Landlines actually *work* for making phone calls the vast majority of the time in comparison to cable which is frequently unreliable. Do you want to be in the middle of a medical emergency and have no phone service for an hour or two? The cable company won't give a damn...

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

It is not compatible with 3.5" as I can determine. Whether it is compatible with a standard 2.5" backplane I don't know, but yes the warranty would be voided. Perhaps WD will sell another version for 2.5" installation as a cheaper alternative to some SAS drives.

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

Unfortunately one of the screws is covered by a black label that must be removed for access. WD does not want anyone to remove the drive without voiding the warranty. The power and SATA connectors are oddly offset due to the massive frame/heatsink, and therefore do not line up with standard...

    iPhone: what's the catch???

I-Phone is for consumers or perhaps SOHO. Most of the multi-billion companies we work for and with are issuing the Blackberries and to a lesser extent, the Palm-type units. TCO is probably a large factor. For example the I-Phone seems to contain many costly entertainment features not needed...

Are the preview images larger as well? The older Canon bodies produce RAW files with 1.5 MP embedded jpegs and the newer ones - at least the 1Ds MK III - have a 4.5 MP preview jpeg. The sensor may also be noisier and the bit depth may be greater. Compression may be less efficient. Any of...

WD velociraptor. It's nothing if not different

There are three contacts for the single-cell battery. Of course three contact are not necessary for charging. I suspect that the other contact is just used to indicate to the charger whether a battery is present. My battery is completely kaput (3 contacts open to wrsp to each other) so I...

MP-E 65 is a special purpose lens best for stationary subjects. It is good in the labs for shooting PCB and some small minature assemblies. It is also useful for small insect (dead) speciation, though an Olympus photomicroscope with Nikon F mount is usually good enough. I find the MP-E 65...

I'm not so happy with the 40D as an improvement on the 30D IQ-wise, though it is more of an overall usability improvement compared to the 20D. I decided not to keep it. Have you considered the Nikon D300? It has really nice features and is good enough for almost all general use. For better...

    Compact Printer

I did not mean something for travel, just a small desktop printer. The former printer was a Canon S300 if that means anything. Now the light keeps blinking yellow. There are not too many decent-looking simple inkjet options with the scanner fax crud. Maybe an HP 6940 or Canon 4500, but they...
