I almost chose a roll paper printer a few years ago, but decided it was not for me. Besides the obvious cost and size issues: 1. Most large printers don't print on small cut sheets so a second printer is needed, preferably with the same inkset. 2. Choices in paper are rather limited; many...

    Sluggish disk(s)

70-80 MB/sec. is fine for copying files from a single drive to another. You'll only achieve 100+ on empty drives for large, sequential transfers. Do disk benchmarks such as HDTach, Atto and HD Tune return typical results?

Reliable FW 800 Card, PCI or PCIe

Yes, but the market is now mostly aerospace. At least they use Cannon connectors rather than the wretched 9-pin FW type. USB 3 will take over from FW800 in the consumer market. I used FW extensively in the early-middle 2000s and typically achieved 40MB/sec. from FW400 vs. 75MB/sec. for FW800.

There are no failures, though I may redo a few later. Paper is $3-5 per sheet and each 80mL ink is $50 or so. They are supposed to be more economical than the inks in smaller printers, but almost everything from the project is printed larger than was typical a few years ago. :cheese:

The cost of the replacement LED is still prohibitive. CFL is a poor solution for a reefer.

Rumor - 4TB hard drive from Hitachi

SSDs - State of the Product?

50MB sec is about half of what a new notebook HD can achieve. The older drives had less sophisticated caches as well. I abandoned my old notebooks for another reason though, the 2GB RAM limit.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The older PATA notebook drives were slow for sure. It's too bad they topped out at 320GB (160 GB/platter). The 7200 RPM drives were even older technology. :(

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

A refrigeration unit usually moves more heat energy than is required to operate. I don't know the actual efficiency, but 100WH may move 500WH for example. Of course the heat ends up in the surrounding room, which is another issue.
