    Windows 7 file transfer weirdness

Well I don't know what it is properly named nowadays. At one time the advertised price was known as MSRP, but I thought it was rejected. Then MAP became illegal in some areas. The point is that the street prices are obviously less that those used in the tables.

I'd not trust the alternatives. Prices sure are less, even ignoring the actual vs. MAP for OEM.:porc:

    USB 3.0 Portable

That is not an issue. There is an eSATA 2-slot toaster connected to one of the hot swap ports. I'm not sure which of four controllers it is on, but at least eight ports in total are used for swappable drives. The 6 ICH ports are for permanently powered devices, including 2 boot SSDs, optical...

The problem with that is eSATA does not supply power. I think they require UBS also in that case.

    USB 3.0 Portable

I'm looking for an inexpensive USB 3 setup for 2.5" hard drives, i.e., a PCIe 1x card and enclosure. Are any of them decent? I'm tired of hauling 1-2TB 3.5" drives in a bag or car all day, yet USB 2 is too slow for the routine backups. Thanks.:cyclop:

According to Roger, the front element is $450. I'm wondering whether to just rent the lens. The problem is that I will only use it for two weeks per year, maybe three in some years. I could rent one ten times for the cost of buying, and that includes the insurance.

    Recommend a Laptop / Notebook (v. $800 / 14" 16:10 screen)

That is the issue. For example, in a 14.1" diagonal dipslay, the 16:9 is 0.56" (7.5%) shorter and 0.33" (2.8%) wider. Overall the display has 5% less area. Typically the pixel pitch is about 0.96x, so that a 16:10 1280x800 LCD is replaced by a 16:9 1366x768 LCD. :@:

The shorter and shorter screens are a ripoff for doing work. The image area is smaller and loss of vertical pixels sucks. I assume he does not need 16:90 to play videos all day? :) :bsmurf:

I dislike EVIL cameras on principle. Once a camera becomes larger than an S90 or so it is not very pocketable. I'd rather use a small DSLR. Howefver, that one with the 16mm might fit in a large pocket. Of course there is niche market for street shooters, where the small size and low cost are...
