    Fix a scratched LCD?

Not gonna happen. The part that is scratched is the front polarizer of the LCD itself. You can't replace it yourself, and you could buy several of them for what you could get a company to replace the front polarizer for.

    Need a good SATA+PATA card

I've used cable select for years, and haven't any issues. I never used to use it, but it seems to work pretty well with the 80pin ATA-66/100 era cables and drives.

How to tell which type of key I have for XP Pro?

I don't know, I haven't let the update install except on my notebook which is completely legit. I have a legal copy or two of XP, but I used XP corporate with a VLK to avoid activation hassles on my other PCs. I might actually break down and get them all nice a legal (with the purchased copies...

How to tell which type of key I have for XP Pro?

Interesting... The copy of XP Media Center that came with my Dell installed on another non-dell PC without asking for a key, but wanted to be activated after install. On my Dell (that shipped with it), it installed without asking for a key and never prompted for activation.

How to tell which type of key I have for XP Pro?

I was able to install a Dell version of XP Media Center on a non-Dell PC without issue, however it wanted to be activated, whereas on the Dell PC it did not ask to be activated. I didn't bother to try to activate it though. On another note, does a normal retail copy of XP ask for the CD Key...

    Notebook processor choice

I agree 100% on the BBB. If you have a problem with Best Buy, for example, and complain to the BBB, they will contact Best Buy for a response, who also by the way helps support the BBB (as all their members do). Best Buy tells the BBB that, "We've since come to a satisfactory resolution with...

    Lost Windows Key

That doesn't seem very MS like... I used that program yesterday at work to retrieve the company's Volume License Key for some lab PCs. It's absurd that we're supposed to buy individual copies of Windows XP when the company has a site license just because we don't want their IT department...

Do nVidia cards still have crappy analog 2D quality?

Does anyone actually still use the analog output on video cards? As long as you're using DVI pretty much all the cards are going to have identical image quality. The last few nVidia cards I've used have had good analog outputs as well.

Where to buy a dead Dell Inspiron 8600?

I've taken apart quite a few laptop LCD modules at work to use the LCD glass in a custom bezel with our own backlight, so I'm fairly comfortable with having them open. Some of the size of the electronics and the flat cables they're using in them makes them look quite fragile and it can be a...

Where to buy a dead Dell Inspiron 8600?

Well, I was able to get it back together and working as good as before it was dropped for $98.15 in parts. The LCD was a bigger pain than I thought it would be. From the description in the auction I thought the display had a bad inverter, but it turned out that it had a bad CCFL tube in the...

The machine survived for about 1 hour before I deleted the partitions form the HD and started over. I started trying to uninstall things and decided it wasn't worth the effort. It's now a lot faster starting up, and it uses a lot less memory just sitting there. Tomorrow I get my two 1GB...

Now, if only I can figure out if the E1505 can actually support 667Mhz Memory, or not. I want to get 2 1GB DDR2 SO-DIMMS for it, but I don't want to spend the extra for the 667Mhz memory unless it can take advantage of it.

I might have to do that. It looks like people are getting stupid on "dead" 8600's on e-bay. A dead one without a HD went for $450 shipped today. Oddly enough (or maybe not), you can get a working used one for ~$50 more.
