    3ware, PATA, 2TB, and Me...

Normally I do that on non-RAID drives, but I'd rather spend the time doing a full format to make sure everything is working rather than get a surprise later when I have a lot of important data on it.

    3ware, PATA, 2TB, and Me...

Yeah, I had to swap them back to port 0 & 1 to get Win XP booting again. I wanted to run them on 6 & 7 for better cooling. Formatting 2TB takes a long time. I'm 50% done and it's been about 7 hours. :(

    3ware, PATA, 2TB, and Me...

Well, I can't say for certain, but the 3ware card shows my 5x500GB array in RAID-5 as 2TB in the BIOS. Now I just have to figure out how why it put my RAID-1 boot drive as the 2nd array and how to fix it.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

You will "meet" some very interesting characters on it. That's all... I felt a bit out of place riding it with my luggage from the airport the the end of the line and back the few times I've done it.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I guess we need the gov't to step in and restrict how far people can live from work, and how often and how far they can travel for pleasure too. I also notice none of you are driving GEO Metro's that get 58MPG on the highway either... Why's that? Shouldn't you lead by example?

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I would think autos have gotten too expensive when I can no long afford one. Each consumer should make that choice based on their own situation. It's not the job of the gov't to ensure that they're too expensive to drive. I like being employed, and I need a car to be employed. You're living...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

People may be stupid, but the gov't isn't responsible to babysit everyone and turn the USA into a nanny state. You can attempt to force car makers to make more fuel efficient cars, but you will have a very hard time getting people to buy them unless you're going to make them...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Ok, so you didn't use the word eliminate. You don't want to make the illegal or prevent them from being made, but you clearly want to make the economics of owning one so expensive that almost no one can afford one. In this regard you're no better than a communist. At least they're honest...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

But you think by eliminating the most popular choice you will create a flurry of choices. But it's not up to you or the gov't to determine what a "fair price" is. Just because you think that the current price is too low and if it were higher there would be more alternatives doesn't mean the...

    3ware, PATA, 2TB, and Me...

Answering my own question it appears that the answer is B) Arrays are automatically truncated to 2TB... That makes 6 500's a waste about 280GB and 5 500 leave me 185GB short. 4 750s would be a much better fit (wasting less space), but I don't think we'll see them at a $150 price point any time...

    3ware, PATA, 2TB, and Me...

So, I know that my 8 port PATA 3ware card can't have an array over 2TB on it. But I need more specifics. I'm hoping some of you know more about the limitations of the 3ware cards. So, what happens if I plug in 6 500GB drives? Correcting for the whole 1000 / 1024 debacle, that would be 2328GB...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

So, to sum up JTR's post, if the gov't took away our right to choose what we drive and controlled how we get around we'd all be better off... Ahahahahaha... Uh no... Until we live in a totalitarian regime and everything is decided by the state, that's not going to happen.

Samsung about to release 1TB drive.

320 & 500 make some sense given 334GB platters. 750GB on the other hand makes no sense. It needs 3 platters. I would guess that the 320GB is a single platter drive and the others have 250GB platters.

Ok, so another really tech savvy friend of mine says this can be done without a router and all the associated headache. He said you can "connect" the two VLANs or physical LANs together with a bridge device. He recommended a particular VM image (a modified version of Sieve) running on VMware...

24TB in a single box is now possible.

Well, there is a PATA Seagate 750GB drive too, so it's not limited to 500GB... And, speaking of antiquated... They're still making AGP video cards. There are even rumors of an AGP ATI/AMD HD 2xxx series card.

Har, Har, Har... Are you going to buy me an 8 port 3Ware SATA RAID card to replace my 8 port PATA one? If not don't poke fun of my rant... Hitachi announced that they were going to make both and confirmed the same thing to me in person at CES, but so far they only have released a SATA version. :(

    Jumbo Frames?

They don't need to. I think what you do is connect all the 10/100 Base-T devices (which are, presumably, older) to your switch. They would be members of the default VLAN (usually VLAN 0), which is untagged. You can have only 1 untagged (native) VLAN. Or you could use a port based VLAN for...

    Jumbo Frames?

Look, I'm not trying to be a dick, but that's just not true. 802.1q VLANs are not the same as assigning multiple IPs to a NIC in windows. When you set up the VLANs using the NIC's VLAN utility you can control jumbo frames setting per VLAN. Here is a screen shot from the Marvel utility for the...
  46. S

    Jumbo Frames?

That wasn't my point though. You can put the gigibit adapters on both VLANs through their support of 802.1q. Then, you wouldn't need a router because you're technically not connecting the two VLANs. The faster machines would be on both VLANs with only a single NIC. They would get internet...
  47. S

    Jumbo Frames?

You can put the gigabit NICs on both VLANs though with just a single cable. Most gigabit NICs support 802.1q which allows you to put them on both VLANs. I don't know if they would be smart enough to file share amongst themselves on the faster VLAN or not though, or if you could force it though.
  48. S

    Jumbo Frames?

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems that most gigabit NICs support 802.1q. On the switch side, I'm sure the Best Buy flavor doesn't. However, the gigabit Linksys SRW series does, and they're not that pricey.
  49. S

    Jumbo Frames?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you use 802.1q / VLAN trunking to put the gigabit machines onto both VLANs so they can both talk amongst themselves on the gigabit only network and so they can also talk to the non gigabit network?
