Normally I do that on non-RAID drives, but I'd rather spend the time doing a full format to make sure everything is working rather than get a surprise later when I have a lot of important data on it.

Yeah, I had to swap them back to port 0 & 1 to get Win XP booting again. I wanted to run them on 6 & 7 for better cooling. Formatting 2TB takes a long time. I'm 50% done and it's been about 7 hours. :(

Well, I can't say for certain, but the 3ware card shows my 5x500GB array in RAID-5 as 2TB in the BIOS. Now I just have to figure out how why it put my RAID-1 boot drive as the 2nd array and how to fix it.

Answering my own question it appears that the answer is B) Arrays are automatically truncated to 2TB... That makes 6 500's a waste about 280GB and 5 500 leave me 185GB short. 4 750s would be a much better fit (wasting less space), but I don't think we'll see them at a $150 price point any time...

So, I know that my 8 port PATA 3ware card can't have an array over 2TB on it. But I need more specifics. I'm hoping some of you know more about the limitations of the 3ware cards. So, what happens if I plug in 6 500GB drives? Correcting for the whole 1000 / 1024 debacle, that would be 2328GB...

320 & 500 make some sense given 334GB platters. 750GB on the other hand makes no sense. It needs 3 platters. I would guess that the 320GB is a single platter drive and the others have 250GB platters.

That wasn't my point though. You can put the gigibit adapters on both VLANs through their support of 802.1q. Then, you wouldn't need a router because you're technically not connecting the two VLANs. The faster machines would be on both VLANs with only a single NIC. They would get internet...

You can put the gigabit NICs on both VLANs though with just a single cable. Most gigabit NICs support 802.1q which allows you to put them on both VLANs. I don't know if they would be smart enough to file share amongst themselves on the faster VLAN or not though, or if you could force it though.

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems that most gigabit NICs support 802.1q. On the switch side, I'm sure the Best Buy flavor doesn't. However, the gigabit Linksys SRW series does, and they're not that pricey.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you use 802.1q / VLAN trunking to put the gigabit machines onto both VLANs so they can both talk amongst themselves on the gigabit only network and so they can also talk to the non gigabit network?

But only with certain GPUs... The GF 8600's have HDCP in the GPU. Most others do not.
