    Microsoft security vs. Avast?

Is Avast 5 different from 4.8 other than the interface? 4.8 keeps updating the definitions normally.

I could only hope that the game does write too much to that drive. :)

    WD 2TB @ 7200 RPM

The 1.5TB FASS seems to be even a little faster than the 2TB. I thought they were the same other than 3 platters vs. 4. It's not shortstroked, but hmm.

    When to Build New System

I played around with fans until I was winded in the face and lost part of. It was painfully obvious that adding more fans increases the noise and improvements in cooling reach diminishing returns. I settled on the following: Front and top 140mm OEM as supplied, 1100 RPM 120mm side fan added...

    I need a bed

Everybody has different comfort levels. You really need to test them out in a store and see if there is anything online about durability of particulr models. Sagging and noise are the main complaints. The better models have fancier spring technologies and various tops. I'm not the fan of the...

    Small TVs

There is a large window nearby so no wall mount is feasible. It is a shame that the old 26-27" CRTs had quite decent and loud sound and now there is nothing but a tin can speaker with rattling plastic. Even my 20" 2005 VGA LCD TV had side panel speakers with decent volume. I don't think the...

The speakers look hidden or practically non-existent. Would it help to get some cheap mini computer speakers to clear up the sound? I think a pair could sit right behind the TV.

    Small TVs

The 22" Panasonic has a TN panel. They have no 26-27", though the 32" are IPS. 31.5" wide is too huge for the table (old one is 20" wide).

    Small TVs

What are the panels in the HD TVs, IPS or PVA? I bought a 32" Samsung two years ago and the viewing angle was quite good. Now some day I may by a TV for myself.

    LSI WarpDrive

I know I won't. There is little to gain over 2x Sandstorm RAID 0, which is not much faster than the old X25-E. Still, the convenience of popping a card in a PCIe slot is tempting. :) I wonder if it delays boot time.

Anyone have a suggestion on a new washing machine?

They seem to last 8-15 years and who knows what the future reliability of new models will be. I don't prefer the front loading washers. There is also no law that the washer/dryer need to match unless they are in a display portion of your house. :) My washing needs are modest since there are...

The distance will be ~4 feet away with SD cable, broadcast network TV, and some commercial DVDs in that order of usage. Are there 1080 26" TVs of similar cost? I'm trying to keep the price reasonable.

    Small TVs

Is Samsung still a good bet in the 22-26" size? I've been thinking about giving this one as a Xmas gift for a workroom. It will be right next to the desk, replacing an ancient 20" Sony. 26" is the largest LCD that will fit and the viewable area for SD is the same as 20". Thoughts?

    LSI WarpDrive

10GB is plenty for my C: partition for now. Most of my apps are 3-8 years old. Even with a clean Win 7 installation and a few new apps I doubt it would exceed 20GB or so. The price vs. capacity for that RAID SSD system is not exactly linear at the moment. 240 and 480 GB models are the best...

    Sound cards?

I have no doubt that a good sound card and drivers would be better than onboard and MS, but molested is an very odd choice of words. :cyclop:
  34. LunarMist

    LSI WarpDrive

480GB is somewhat useless for me. It's not really enough for a usable block of data but unnecessarily large for a C: drive.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If the memory chips are multiples of 16Gb, then you are correct that there needs to be at least some space for ECC, spare blocks, etc. It will probably be 60GB in reality. The Corsairs are 55.8GB formatted.

    Samsung Test

There is a bootable CD ESTool on Samsung's website, but it looks like a 20+ year old DOS app. Waiting 5 hours for each test is very annoying when there is a small pile of HD204UI drives to check. Is there a better way to thoroughly test the drives in Windows? Thanks.
