Thanks. That stinks and I would have no use for one - not that I would probably have a use for a device that cannot accept a hard drive like this.

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

Yeah, it has been around for a long time. That firmware is mostly useful for the low-end P/S cameras that are more devoid of features.

Megapickles is derogatory slang directed at those with limited technical expertise in digital imaging, e.g., people excited over 14 megapickle, pinkie-nail-sized sensors in their P/S "digicams." Did I really have to explain it?

    D-link DIR-655 = Garbage / Don't Buy One! (v. DNS problems)

A while ago I bought a simple 5-port D-Link DGS-2025 gigE switch and it is fine. Of course now I'll find out it is sending messages to the Russians or it will break or something. :spiderman:

    2.5" x 1TB

Whoever buys the drives to build storage systems should not put up with that for long. I know that if we find a major supplier to be below standard they are done for, even if it takes 3-5 years to withdraw completely. However, it should be easier to switch vendors where there is a comparable...

That is a good point and I must admit ignoring anything not on the main four networks. Now what in the world is up with the regurgitated Hawaii 5-0. The players are dull and there are several Koreans for no apparent reason.

    Noise Cancellation

I have no idea what they are. It will not load. There is no point in me spending that much for the airplane sound. However, I would not trust Logitech for anything. :p $100 is the limit since they will break after a while anyway.

    Noise Cancellation

I have some of those, even some overpriced ones. What I want is the ear-plugging "buds" style that also has the active noise cancellation. The two together are better for the jet engines. In other situations I use the passive ear-plugging type.

    Noise Cancellation

Yeah, I know there were some old threads, but I cannot find a good pair of in-ear, active noise-reducing headphones. I had a few pairs of the Turtle Beach, but they have died/been damaged by various mishaps over the years. Basically I need some that would help cut engine noise and maintain...

    Microsoft security vs. Avast?

Today Avast is popping up on 6-7 systems on three states, warning users to update to v.5 and that definitions will expire soon. However they are all good until at least the end of February and some until November. What is up with that?

    question Keep drive powered down?

Can do you spin down a non-boot drive on the ICH in ACHI mode with a command?
  40. LunarMist

    question Keep drive powered down?

Maybe not drives on ICH, but most SATA RAID controllers and often the onboard extra ports support individual drives powering on/off as hot swap. I have 4 external SATA drives in an Addonics enclosure and 3 internal drives that function as such. It would be a major PITA to have to reboot. :shake2:
  41. LunarMist

    question Keep drive powered down?

I normally do it when the computer is running. I suppose there might be a problem with some wimpy power supplies, but one drive should be fine.
  42. LunarMist

    Something Random

On close inspection I believe it is the power supply inverter switching frequency. The input is only one cell, so ~1.2-1.5V.

  45. LunarMist

    question Keep drive powered down?

The hotswap bays are fine for occasional use. If your SATA controller and OS support hot swapping you can use a power switch for the drive(s) that do not need to be on all the time. I have been doing that for years with my backup drives. Some chipsets such as SIL3132 support a power down...

Weird free space problem with 2TB drive

Sorry, I'm losing track of the plot by now. :) Any FAT seems like a bad idea for a large drive, especially after a system crash. Even the external drives are supplied with NTFS now.
