    Tips for encoding video DVDs

I did a bunch of testing years ago on several of the mpeg-2 encoders / mpeg-2 recoders for shrinking a dual layer DVD to a single layer DVD. I also encoded the occasional DV file to DVD with a few of them.

    Tips for encoding video DVDs

Honestly, I'd just buy more tapes and keep the original tapes someplace cool with low humidity. I would not alter the video in any way. Keep it in 480i. Let the playback device do the upscaling / enhancing. MPEG-2 (DVD) at a very high bitrate is still the way to go assuming you use the right...

It is very likely 480i. You should keep it in 480i.

    Tips for encoding video DVDs

Not if he wants decent quality. He should stick to mpeg-2 since it can handle interlaced video nicely. I would recommend one of TMPEGenc's MPEG encoders / products. They're a little slow when setup up for maximum quality, but it has very, very, good quality output...

Yes, but only via analog. Whoopteedoo! :p Only the most expensive one can drive 4 displays via digital.

Right quad DVI was $599. The cheaper cards only do two dual link DVI outputs, which a sub $200 ATI or nVidia card can do.

I have pretty good luck with rebates. A lot of the people on Slickdeals got their rebates from earlier this year when the same promotion was going on. A few who had problems called and got 'em cleared up easily.

Another mass build and some hardware thoughts

I thought the trick was to always go over budget and say you're sorry later. If you finish up under budget they'll just cut it for next year. If you go over they might increase it next year.

Per the graphs on dpreview the 20D and 30D are slightly better than the XSi in terms of luminance noise. Chroma they are equal unless you turn off C.Fn II-4 on the XSi. Of course all the graphs are derived from JPEG files, not RAW. The review of the Rebel XTi has graphs comparing the JPEG...

I realize there are more pixels, but even zooming into 100% on both (sorta taking the extra pixels out of the equation) the XSi looks noticeably sharper on a pixel level. The 10D seemed cleaner in large flat areas at ISO100 too, but I haven't done a lot of comparing. Just a few shots. I...

I was a little surprised to see that my 10D has less noise in the RAW files at ISO400 than the XSi when converted using Canon's Digital Photo Professional. The XSi however is noticeably sharper at 100% zoom though, so that's probably why.

How do you figure? I have used 1GB cards for years with a 6MP EOS 10D without any complaints. The RAW files were about 7MB meaning I can fit ~140 on a card. In contrast, the Rebel XSi has 12MB (RAW) and 16MB (RAW+JPEG) files. That would be ~250 (RAW + JPEG) or ~340 (RAW) images on a 4GB...

I you want to get really technical it's a Field of View (FOV) crop since it really doesn't change the effective focal length of the lens, but it's much easier to think about it as a focal length multiplier.

Because your CPU is not fast enough to playback the movies without heavy assistance from the GPU, and nVidia doesn't make any AGP cards that can do the assistance. ATI does, but my understanding is that the acceleration only works under Vista (but I haven't kept up on it really close over the...

First, it's a PS3, not an xbox3. The xbox 360 does not have a blu-ray drive and can't play Blu-Ray discs. The PS3 has a blu-ray drive and can play 'em. Second, I have Blu-Ray & HD-DVD playback in my HTPC. That Lite-On drive is by no means a complete solution. There are necessary CPU, video...
