End of the World As We Know It

That must explain why they got a big premium over their closing price from Friday.

SSDs - State of the Product?

That depends on what and how you're testing. Here a 7200 RPM laptop drive wipes the floor with some of the "slow" SSDs.

That depends on what you already own. It doesn't work with just anything.

    Major Appliances

My wife and I bought this one last year. The automatic ice maker is nice, but I'm not a big fan of the freezer. Basically, you can't put tall items in the freezer due to the doors and trays which can be annoying. I do like the in door water dispenser. It beats having to open the fridge to...

    Major Appliances

Also, if you're planning to do your off grid experiment in a reasonably short time frame buying high end appliances is a waste of money. I'd look at http://www.consumersearch.com/ for help finding the right appliances.

    Major Appliances

You can't really go off-grid with normal appliances. Propane is your friend if you're trying to be off-grid.

    nVidia may have "issues"

nVidia won't admit to it, so no one knows for sure.

Yeah, it's called an X-ray. You'll need to see your doctor to get one though.

I'm pretty sure he was talking about his foot, not the HD.

    nVidia may have "issues"

I think they just stop working due to a failure of the solder balls under the BGA.

    Samsung Storage announcements

FWIW, I've had good luck with Directron in the past the few times I ordered from them. I haven't had any issues with supermediastore either, but I've only ordered less expensive items from them.

I'm not sure. I'd take a look at the HTPC forum on AVSforum if I were you.

    HTPC - Blu Ray playback

You can't change the sound device in Vista like you can in XP? (I've never used it)
  22. S

    HTPC - Blu Ray playback

No idea, I don't run it. If you don't have a video card with audio processing (ATI ones) I don't see how it could be a requirement.
  23. S

    HTPC - Blu Ray playback

Of course it can play back audio. I use co-ax SPDIF from my PC for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray audio. Where did you get the idea that it can't?

    Which Car?

I'd buy a used car. Probably a domestic though since you can get ones that are only a few years old for dirt cheap, until Honda and Toyota's which are 10+ years old and still expensive.

    End of TV :(

It is... You just need an antenna with good UHF. Rabbit ears are better at VHF than UHF.
  34. S

    End of TV :(

I'm just reporting what I've read and have experienced. I found they did not work very well, even very close to the towers (~5 miles). A small antenna like the Zenith Silver Sensor on the other hand worked very well.
  35. S

    End of TV :(

I'm not so sure what your options are at >30 miles. I'd tend to favor putting a large mast type antenna aimed at the towers in your attic.
  36. S

    End of TV :(

How far are you from the towers? Most TVs use external antennas. I've only ever seen a few that had rabbit ears attached to them. I'd take a look at http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx if I were you.
  37. S

    End of TV :(

FWIW, I've read that rabbit ears don't work very well for receiving ATSC digital signals... There are "smallish" LCDs out there. You will probably want a slightly larger widescreen set to keep your 4:3 viewing area the same. And, what specifically was wrong with the sets that you linked to at...

    End of TV :(

    That's another option.
  39. S

    End of TV :(

Why do you want a small LCD TV? The beauty of HD is that you can have a big LCD TV and get a much more enjoyable viewing experience.

    The "Blog"

Apostrophes are not as badly used as you think. They're acceptable to show pluralization of abbreviations. So, LCD's, or TV's, or PhD's, and that type of thing is acceptable. That said the random "quotes" is definitely mind boggling.

All I know is a DVR comes in very handy when dealing with watching the olympics. You can watch 4-5 hours of primetime coverage in under 1 hour.

I have a XP Pro 32-bit system with 4GB of RAM. XP doesn't use all of only 3.5GB, but I don't care. Everything I read said to avoid using the /3G switch.

    Broken Server 2008?

The machines sound like they have some disk IO subsystem problem, or some sort of drive encryption that makes 'em really slow. My work laptop was a speed demon prior to getting PGP Desktop's drive encryption put on it. Now it's a complete and total dog.
