SSDs - State of the Product?

That pegged my CPU for a bit, but I didn't see anything abnormal beyond that. What does the computer do when it starts stuttering?

SSDs - State of the Product?

All I can say is this thing rocks. I haven't used this notebook much since installing it, or tweaked anything for it yet, but it's way faster than the conventional HD that was in here.

I would run 32-bit. Application compatibility is a big unknown (to me at least) under 64-bit. I can't think of any benefit you'd get from running XP 64-bit. It seems like all potential pitfalls with no benefit.

SSDs - State of the Product?

You mean the old put a 2nd HD in the modular bay instead of an optical drive trick? I'd rather put a 2nd battery or optical drive in there. If set up your system to permanently use the 2nd drive (like the pagefile) you'll be hard pressed to take it out and use the other options.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm going to be putting one in my old Dell laptop which has 2GB of RAM. For what I do with it I could probably turn the pagefile off though I'm not sure that will really lengthen the life of the drive significantly.

Does anyone ideas why OCZ suggests turning off hibernation support for SSDs? Also, do you guys turn off the pagefile?

Don't think so. My HTPC runs XP just fine, but XP and ATI's driver writing incompetence preventing a Radeon HD4550 from delivering 7.1 LPCM audio under XP. The nVidia IGP's don't have the same problem.

That's an easy way to do it, but the picture quality isn't as good. There's nothing quite like the pristine 1080i broadcast (aside from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD).

That's what I said when I got my 1.5TB drives for ~$100. Wireless will be very likely be fine for DVD images. HD playback will be iffy (depending on signal strength and other factors).

We all must have very different ideas of silent. I don't see how you can put multiple 3.5" HDs in a PC and call it silent. Under some conditions (no audio playing + quiet house) I can hear the highly praised (for being quiet) 40GB Toshiba 4200RPM 2.5" laptop drive in my HTPC. I currently have...

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

I wouldn't have spent the money, but it's quite a bit different from buying a 1.5TB 5400RPM drive for $150-$160 when you can get a 1.5TB 7200RPM drive for $~100-120. In the case of your Intel SSD, you can't get a higher performing SSD for 2/3rds the price (that I'm aware of).

The E8400 is unnecessary. The E5200 will work just fine for you and save you some money. You also don't need 4GB of RAM although I realize it isn't expensive. Are you trying to make this PC silent? If so, I'd look at a SSD and put the storage somewhere else on your network. Also, what OS do...

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

Regardless, they're all out to lunch. Seagate 7200RPM 1.5's have dipped as low as ~$100. Paying ~$150 for a 5400RPM 1.5TB drive is just stupid.

Upgrade Core Duo Dell E1505 to Core2 Duo?

Well, I just more or less picked 80GB out of the air and made the partition that size. :D This was driven by the STR graph here and the fact that the old drive was ~80GB and still had plenty of room left on it.

Upgrade Core Duo Dell E1505 to Core2 Duo?

Well, I scored a T7400 for $90 shipped, so I went ahead with this plan. Also, FWIW, the short stroked 500GB HD made a huge improvement to the performance of the machine. That may be mostly due to the much higher STR, and not the reduced access times, but either way, it's vastly improved.

I understand the concept. I'm just saying that I've never seen a RAID controller that actually does it.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I don't think there are any RAID controllers that actually spread the reads across the drives for improved performance.
  27. S

SSDs - State of the Product?

Does RAID-1 make any sense for a SSD? Obviously a SSD can fail, but I would think that more likely it would be the cycles on the drive that would cause it to fail. In which case RAID-1 doesn't buy you much of anything against that type of failure.

Upgrade Core Duo Dell E1505 to Core2 Duo?

FSB is the same. Dell was doing Microcode updates all the way into mid 2007 though the bios updates don't explicitly say what CPUs they support. I found some mentions on other forums as the T7200, T7400, and T7600 are supported.

Are SLC drives immune to the stuttering, or is that a function of the Jmicron controller? My HTPC has a very small install of XP on it, and I don't need a large drive. I didn't realize the one I linked to at Amazon was an older OCZ model, so I will be passing on it.
