    Something Random

I am practically dead from the last couple weeks of vacation travel. I flew over 5000 miles and then we drove more than 2400 miles in 8 days (I did 95% of the driving). There was barely time for about 4 hours of sleep each night on the road. Fortunately that rental vehicle had unlimited...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Bleh, they are 16:9 with very small pixel pitch. Why not get a proper 30" monitor?

Damnit Merc! At your age I think it would have been a good idea and not much to lose.

    question Frys

I once returned a small item at Frys and explained that it was defective. I looked for another one but there none remaining in stock. The I resumed shopping, looking for other products. About 30 minutes later I was in the same aisle again and sure enough the one I had returned was on the shelf...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Interesting. Is that just the same old RAID controller strategy with a bunch of memory bolted on, or something else?

Help with safe, secure storage of video footage

For most users monitoring and maintenance is impractical and quite expensive compared to archiving. And anything online still needs backups somewhere.

    Something Random

Exactly. La Perla is kind of pricey and she likes those for some reason.

question HDD thermal management (keeping your cool)

Why? Doesn't management have to fix the AC when it malfunctions?

I had no idea that bras were so expensive.

The basic MRC polarizer is the least I can suggest. Avoid the thin polarizers unless you really need them for superwide lenses.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I meant that if the drive were really dead the E9 attribute would not be readable.

I think you mean decrease speed, i.e., increase duration. :) The purpose is for using wide apertures in bright light. They are more often used for video/motion pictures where you have a fixed or nearly fixed shutter speed. As well ND are good for flowing water.

I just received a nice and rather expensive nano-coated B+W polarizer. It is very thin and still has a front thread. Construction is rather better than the Hoyas, which also have good glass.

Normally bad filters negatively affect IQ, but poor filter threads filters can also get stuck on the lens or crossthread. UV or protection filters are especially pointless most of the time, and some of the cheap ones are rather awful.

The Paragon tool boots from a disk in Linux or something. The WD Acronis tool was a windows app.

    Alignment

The computer does not see the drive when I tried the Paragon. I have no idea if that bootable disk would be better. It is too late now though as the drive is 75% full. The write speeds seemed fairly normal.

    Strange

That seems a bit crazy. So if there are 5,000 users you need to do each one manuallly or you have a key file of some kind? I am only the business owner of one computer system at work, but whoever has the sysadmin role is not allowed to know any passwords. Users are trained not to give out...

It is like this drive, but in a retail box. The box had nothing in it but the drive and screws. There is no CD or cables anymore.
  43. LunarMist

Well, that doesn't work in this computer so I give up. I will use the drive without alignment and hope that works.
