    Windows 7 nonsense

Well FWIW, I deleted them and haven't noticed any changes, so I guess they weren't needed.

So, I have 2 Desktop.ini files on my Desktop in Windows 7. Can I safely delete them? One contains: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183 The other contains: [.ShellClassInfo]...

Well, I submitted an RMA request to Gigabyte. We'll see what happens.

    Netbook for the wife

Well, they're here and shipping from various retailers. The Acer 1410 has been updated and is available with a dual core SU2300 (1MB L2, 1.2GHz, 800MHz FSB) now. There's also a craptacular version with a single core Celeron M Processor ULV 743 (1MB L2 cache, 1.3GHz, 800MHz FSB). Acer 1810...

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Well, after 2 hours of MPEG-4 AVC Blu-Ray playing the GPU was at 46C and the CPU was at 28C. Not too shabby if I say so myself. :bstd:

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

A far as I know, none of the Core processors have had Hyper-Threading. That went away when dual core processors showed up.

    Windows 7 nonsense

Apparently there is a easier way to do a clean install with upgrade media than the double install method. link

But the E8300 doesn't have hyper threading?

    E5300 Stuck Core Temp?

From what I've read online the stuck ones work above that temp, they just won't work below it. 40C isn't enough to engage any sort of thermal protection, so I guess I won't worry about it.
  19. S

    E5300 Stuck Core Temp?

So I built up my new HTPC yesterday. It works surprisingly well. This morning I was checking the temperature of the CPU using Real Temp and CoreTemp. They reported the same thing, but core-0 appears to be stuck at 40C regardless of the load on the CPU (though the other core never got...

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Well, I'm pretty impressed with this system. The HDMI audio is nice. It's a tad quirky having to change audio modes to get PCM for Blu-Ray, but overall I like it.

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

The Zotac came with active cooling, which seemed adequate, but not up to my silent standard. I pulled it off and put my Thermalright HR-05 IFX (running passive). Updating the firmware on my 30GB OCZ Vertex was a total pain in the butt, but that's got nothing to do with this motherboard...
  22. S

    Windows 7 nonsense

Right, but aren't XP Corp installs technically not activated? Or are they considered activated even though they don't go through the activation process?
  23. S

    Windows 7 nonsense

Just to clarify I've got legit licenses for all my XP boxes. I was just wondering how 7 treats XP Pro Corporate.

    Windows 7 nonsense

Apparently hacks were released to enable Remote Desktop Host on Vista Home not too long after Vista showed up on the market. No idea if history will repeat itself. The bottom line is getting 3 copies of Windows 7 Home Premium for $134 (Family Pack at Buy.com) is something I'd pay. Buying...
  27. S

    Windows 7 nonsense

It looks like I can answer my own question. Home Premium can not be a Remote Desktop host. :crap: That'd probably be the only feature I'd miss.
  28. S

    Windows 7 nonsense

So has anyone sorted out the details of the XP to 7 "upgrade" yet? I realize it's really a clean install, but which XP versions can be upgraded, etc? Also, for home use with no domains is there really a compelling reason to get Professional or Ultimate over Home Premium?

I can only hope. I hated that piece of crap board. It had so many quirks.

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Good point. I wonder if they keep new 3 year old boards around to send out as replacements...

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

I really want to find someone local who will let me borrow an AM2 processor so I can absolutely confirm it's the motherboard before I start the RMA process.
  32. S

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

Turns out the warranty on Gigabyte motherboards is tied to manufacturer date, not purchase date. It was made Week 47 2006, so I have about 1 month left.
  33. S

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

So, should I attempt to warranty the old motherboard to Gigabyte? I bought it in Dec/2006 It seems very unlikely that an undervolted AMD 4200+ X2 processor died.
  34. S

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

What do you use your HTPC for that you need an E8300 for? I would have bought a less powerful CPU than the E5300, but you just don't save any money.

It's all relative to what you're going to do with the pictures. If you're going to resize them to 640x480 and put 'em on facebook, then it doesn't much matter what camera you use.

Well, I ordered the Zotac + E5300, and I paid the $30 for overnight shipping.
  41. S

My HTPC died! New Build Time!

For a HTPC it's no better. The people on AVSforum said the stock cooling on the ASUS isn't very adequate for a lower airflow (aka quiet) HTPC and it runs very hot. If that's the case and I need to slap an aftermarket cooler on it, I might as well get the cheaper non-passive Zotac. I already...

Well, if you expect DSLR performance then sure none of them are acceptable. Where are the sample images you've seen from the S90 / G11 at high ISO that you consider unacceptable?

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

A few of the newer P&S models have decent high ISO performance. The S90 and G11 look ok.

Guess I have it down to these three motherboards. Newegg Comparison I would have rather had the Gigabyte that's been discontinued though.

So I went to power up the HTPC tonight and it was dead. It wouldn't POST. No beep codes. I tried clearing the BIOS nothing worked. I pulled it from the case, stripped it down to the bare minimum and still nothing. I tried another power supply with no luck. Tried it without the RAM, etc...
