So, I'm in the process of copying just over 5TB of data from one RAID-6 array to another. The copy is moving along at >300MB/sec. It's 12% done and FastCopy is informing me it will still take another 8 hours 36 minutes to complete the copy and do the verify. Who would have thought something...

    question Upgrade HD Worthwhile

I wouldn't buy that one. It's supposedly an A-Data and they're shipping a non production ready firmware (per SandForce). A-Data also doesn't have any firmware updates posted yet either and it's totally unknown if they will, and then if the A-Data firmware will work on the Microcenter drive.

The local Nissan stealership wanted ~$1k from me to fix a bad MAF and change the "$25" air filter. The part has a MSRP of ~$560, but it can be bought for ~$425 from other dealers. Swapping it out should be a 15 minute job. So, I guess they figure they should get $400+ in labor for 15...

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

Seems like it might be a bad wall wart. The switch started misbehaving pretty quickly after I loaded it up. I took a multimeter to the PCB and found the 12V input was bouncing around. I swapped the wall wart for the one I had from the GS105 and am testing again.

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

Well, I opened it up. No sign of swollen caps. The main power supply cap is a Nichicon (Japanese) cap. I poked around inside it with a multimeter and nothing seems wrong. So, I plugged a bunch of stuff back into it to see if it would fail again under a "heavy" load and am now pumping as much...

    Question regarding SAS controllers

A System Engineer?!?!? RUN AWAY NOW!!! :rotfl: Seriously though I'd pay very close attention to how they describe the position and what the job entails. Based on my work experience a typical "system engineer" doesn't do much real engineering. They usually deal with documentation (writing...

    Question regarding SAS controllers

A SATA or SAS controller is just the application / software running on the microcontroller on the storage device. Knowledge of the specific application is less important for a fresh out of school EE than an working understanding of how a microcontroller works and operates inside any real time...

    Question regarding SAS controllers

Personally, I think you're headed somewhat down the wrong path. They're not really going to expect a recent college EE grad to have SAS or SATA experience. I'm not sure trying to learn it now is going to do you much good since your knowledge won't be very deep. They're more likely going to...

Intel drivers for > 2TB drives

Well... Why would you have a 2TB limitation in your drivers? It's not like the SATA spec topped out at 2TB. When a 4TB drive comes out will newer drivers be needed because this driver only supports up to 3TB? Typically when you write a low level driver you try to support the spec in full...

Will Dynamic Disks survive a Vista to Win 7 upgrade?

I've assigned disks to folders for years and haven't found it problematic. Typically I have a small partition / drive (~100MB) that is empty with the exception of some folders that have drives mounted to them. This single drive is then shared over the network, so other computers can map one...

question Storage for light video editing

Maybe, but he's dealing with a heavily compressed data format which means the data rates for the video files are low, like 5MB/sec, so I would expect some other part of the process to bottleneck it before the STR of the drives do. Plus a lot of video editing programs like to decompress and...

24 Megapickle? Is it a Vlasic pickle? ARM CPU's don't run x86 instructions, so it doesn't really matter unless someone writes a RAW converter that runs on ARM. I think they're more power efficient, but less powerful.
