    Third Party Batteries

:erm: That doesn't make any sense. In the case of NiMH cells they will self discharge faster if not used, but they don't discharge faster. If they were to discharge faster they would hold less charge. As to the topic, I'm not sure you can make any solid conclusions based on the percentage...

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

I guess my memory was bad. The "brightness" control on my 24" monitor adjusts backlight brightness, not anything with the way the LCD panel is driven.

I think most still have contrast & brightness at least if they have an analog input.

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

I thought most LCDs now days had a backlight brightness control (like laptops) that worked independently of traditional brightness and contrast? My 24" LCD monitor does. My 52" TV does.

    Monitors w/massive brightness range

Hey, I didn't say the high resolution screen should be standard, though frankly I don't see the problem with that. Text size, icon size, and just about everything else should be scalable independent of the physical pixel count on the screen. Look at the iPhone 4. It has a very high resolution...

    low-end laser printers these days?

So, which one of these would you buy? The HL-2270DW can be bought for under $100 shipped, but has a starter toner cartridge (700 pg yield) and a drum that's good for 12k pages. The HL-5370DW is ~$180 shipped and has a full size toner cartridge (3k pg yield) and a drum that's good for 25k...

    low-end laser printers these days?

Time for a refresh on everyone's thoughts on the topic ~3 years later. I'm thinking of getting a cheap B&W networked (wired) duplex'ing laser printer for home since the whole USB print server idea seems sketchy and about half as expensive as a low end laser printer. At my last job we got a...

    question Larger TVs

All LCDs have subpixels, most of the time they're R, G, & B. Larger panels often further break down the subpixels.

Try other tips? Shure has great tips. I got these Black Foam Sleeves free at CES several years ago for my E4c's when the SE series first came out. Previously I had been using the yellow foam tips. The Black Foam Sleeves seal better and don't get all nasty either since they're not an open...

    question Larger TVs

No, that's what you see when waiting for Flickr to load the image. You obviously didn't wait long enough, or have NoScript blocking some of the domains needed for it to work correctly.

Yes, each RGB sub-pixel is split into two and they're angled in opposite directions.

    question Larger TVs

Yes, I think so. Yes if you want a glossy panel. Samsung calls it Ultra Clear Panel. That's code for glossy. I wanted a matte screen on my LCD TV when I bought it a little over 2 year ago. I think the LNxxC630 is the highest end Samsung set that's not glossy, though there are reports that...

And, FWIW, this is the pixel structure of a Samsung S-PVA panel. You'll note there are several subdomains in each subpixel that are independently controlled.

    question Larger TVs

It's hard to say how long they'll last. I think most things are intended to be disposable these days. There's nothing inherent to LCD technology that would make them last only a short while. There are a lot of electronics in them, but that's not new to TV's. If you're after the ultimate...

Chalk one up to Newegg's inconsistent packaging. At least this time they seem to have gone overboard. I ordered 2 2.5" HD's. Here's how they came packaged. Each one was wrapped in bubble wrap and put in it's own box. Those two boxes were surrounded with packing paper in a much larger box.

Sil3132: Can Silicon Image do anything right?

I agree. Which is why you should test the cards in another PC. What do the reviews for the cards say over at Newegg (assuming they sell them)? I have to assume the cards can't all be complete crap, which means the motherboard may be the issues.

question Multiple servers booting from SAS

You need to make / buy a SAN that uses FiberChannel (FC) and then put FC cards in the servers. All your data is stored on the SAN and uses FC to talk to the external servers. The FC cards in the servers are treated like a disk controller by BIOS / OS. You could also use iSCSI. It's lower...
