I'd probably not buy a fine DSLR as a refurb, but I'll buy a refurb Canon lens as it has the same warranty and typically has been tested/adjusted. DSLRs seem to be a rarity nowadays with all the MILCs and such, but they can't be beaten for action with the long teles. Yeah, everyone knows you...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I suspect he's not using anything that's storage limited, especially if those are the X25-M with their relatively slow speed and low capacity.

    dSLR thread

Let's hope there is no III. The 100-400 II should have been 80mm at the wide end given that the Sony 70-400 has been around for a few years and then the 80-400 Nikkor was updated last year. The IQ better be very good to justify the critical loss at the wide end. That creates significant grief...

Really? Can't they make "wider" controllers with more going down in parallel?

SSDs - State of the Product?

If a 1TB drive is ~$400, then why can't someone make a 4TB drive for $1500 or so? I understand that there may be engineering challenges in the 2.5" 7mm form factor powered by the 5V supply, but space and power should not be such issues in the 3.5"x1" desktop drives.

G.Skill Phoenix Blade (480GB) PCIe SSD Review

That seems like an OCZ PCIe drive from several years ago. How well does it perform when dirty?

SSDs - State of the Product?

Six years ago we had the first decent SSDs from Intel and since then capacity growth has not exactly dramatically gained on HDDs. When will SSD capacity be equal, 5-7 years from now?

SSDs - State of the Product?

A few years ago some of you were predicting the SSDs would take over, but it's not really happening in the 3.5" size. Now we have 8 and 10TB HDDs, but still only 1TB SSDs. It's ridiculous. :(

The 100-400 is a 1998/99 lens, so I've been waiting many years for this update. I should have asked if anyone is getting one.

    8TB and no helium

Are any drives truly reliable? To me a drive is a consumable. Seagate drives have been better than the crappy Samsungs for me, and about the same as the Hibachis. Not that I always agree with Merc, but my older WD green drives have not been doing well so I'm off WD except for the Blacks.

    dSLR thread

It appears that I may receive 2 or 3 100-400 II lenses next week. All the pre-ordering, cancellations and changes are making me crazy. Is anyone else receiving more than one copy of the lens?

Holy moly, it has 6 platters at 5400RPM. Are other high capacity drives now like that?

    8TB and no helium

I don't think the write cycles are any different, just slow. I don't know how to the do the NAS, so they would be individuals.
  15. LunarMist

    8TB and no helium

Hmm. I recently got a couple of additional different 6TB drives. 8TB drives might be good for backups, but how slow are they really?

This is the thread for the discussion of interesting apps.

What is the best app for the Androidic slideshow? The default ones in the tablet have limited controls. At least I need to control the intervals, e.g., 7.5 seconds and sort order, e.g., date/EXIF timestamp/alphabetic and numeric. Ideally I could select specific images as a set or to exclude...

That's very strange. Normally the SanDisk 32GB SDHC Extreme pro cards are nearly symmetrical with writes around 90.

SSDs - State of the Product?

2000TB is enough for me. I'm still waiting for the 2TB SSDs though. Why are there none yet? The 1TB SSDs are often less than four hundred now.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Did you ever receive a replacement? I'm not sure about the newer Samsung drives. It seems there is some fancy footwork allowing for short bursts of speed to the faux MLC/SLC but that some users complain of slowdowns if 600GB are written continuously for example.

At this point how meaningful are the results? Many of those SSDs are no longer manufactured.

    Best movie you've seen

I'd rather read a review of a film before watching it than see a trailer. Many times the film is worse than indicated by the trailer, though sometimes not. That one is particularly awful and shows nearly nothing.

    Home NAS

The Hitachi drive seems to be good. I'm guessing the configuration is 5x1.2GB platters. Interestingly enough the seek times are much less than the similar Seagate drives and the mounting holes are located normally. :)

Not yet. I did give up on the 7D II, but will wait until the summer to see if a 1DX replacement is on the way. Meanwhile, I'm also considering the rumored Sony A9 to see if it resolves the major limitations of the A7r.

The 1D-X has worked out well. I should have made a purchase earlier. Despite having only 18 MP, the images are very clean and highly enlargeable. The color quality at high ISO is noticeably better than any other Canon bodies, even the 5D III. :) Of course the 43+ frame buffer and 10-12 FPS...
