    Something Random

Insomnia sucks. Especially when you run out of alcohol. What to do when no-one is posting to SR or SF? 1. Refresh the forums as fast as your web connection (and Firefox) can handle it. 2. Read a slashdot thread in the gaming section on "-1" Damn, I'm not even creative enough to think up...

    SMC 8505T GIGe switch

Well, I'd reccomend putting quieter fans in it rather than disconnecting half of them. Once you have the chasis open, you should be able to identify the fans that are there now. With that info, you can find a quieter one with somewhere close to the same airflow. Just be careful, it may have a...

[NEWS] 10K "Enterprise" 2.5" Seagate SCSI Dri

Just what I thought. But laptops of this caliber shouldn't even come with batteries. That space would be better spent trying to cool this beast. Most people who require this kind of horsepower have an outlet handy anyway (conference rooms, movie/TV sets, aircraft). And for those who need a...

[NEWS] Hard drives: 600GB by 2007

I know many, many users who buy PCs based on their spec; having no basis for their own needs at all. A new client recently bought a 3GHz P4 with 1GB RAM and a 160GB HDD for their small business (2 employees). They'd been watching the market for a few weeks and saw "a good deal" for ~$1800...

    In search of a super-firewall

Thanks, the SME530 looks interesting. I've seen boxes that do e-mail filtering like a firewall. It is attached in series with your normal firewall and filters all the mail stuff I want (passing through the rest). I can't remember the name, and it only did mail, but it sounded very interesting.

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

Putting a G550 in a server seems like...oh, I don't know....massive overkill! Besides the unnecissary power consumption, it's a pretty big waste of cash... If your GF doesn't want it, I might be able to take it off your hands ;)

64-Bit WinXP Beta Available to General Public

The only difference I'd expect is less stability. I have no doubt that it is the path of the future and allows for more powerfull systems; but right now all I'd expect is less mature code.
