    Titanium jewelry/watches

It was an absolute blast. It wasn't hard to do; it just took a long time (replacing the bits frequently) and made an awful noise. The precision of the machining was the finished product, there really wasn't much else to do.

    Titanium jewelry/watches

Just talked to the g/f, and she has no knowlegde in the Ti stuff. She works in the more traditional metals (silver and gold), that are soft enough and melt at a low enough temperature that you can have more fun with it. I, however, do have some experience with the stuff. I helped my...

[News] Seagate Readies 750GB Hard Drives

So long as it can be turned off in firmware, that's fine with me. I wouldn't mind such a feature in my server room, but my desktop must remain silent! (one more reason for local storage to be solid state).

[News] Seagate Readies 750GB Hard Drives

300GB and 320GB? What the hell? The difference in price couldn't be more than a few bucks at the retail level (those are likely $80-$90 drives). It can't possibly justify the added complexity of the supply chain. Perhaps one is a 8MB and the other a 16MB cache?

[News] Seagate announces 15K.5 + perpendicular recording

Yay! A new hard drive that is actually faster in a significant way! Now, where's the SATA version? Seagate doesn't make SCSI controlers or cables, so just put on a cheaper interface and charge the same amount.

    Sempron 2800 on GA-K8VM800M

IIRC, it is still lower power, just not by as much. And I think "successor" is more apropriate than "alternative".

    Musings on a new PC

I feel your pain; I've done similar in the past. That's why I don't add crap to my system anymore. No expansion cards, no break-out cables, no small fans, no optical or floppy drives. All that stuff is on another pc that I don't care about (e-machine) that sits in the closet. In my box their...

    IIS headache vs Apache simplicity.

Pretty pictures. I wonder how hard it was to generate them? Windows puts a lot of effort into making their product easy to use and have lots of features (and it is), and then attempts to secure it. Apache puts a lot of effort into making their product secure (and it is) and then attempts to...

    Dell De-Crapifier

My complaints aren't about Dell hardware, it really isn't that bad. My complaint is about Dell users; these are people that for the most part really aren't smart enough to own a computer. Dell makes computing accessible, therefore making these people feel empowered, and that is dangerous. Job...

    Small LCD TV...reccomendations?

These will be wall-mounted and used just to watch DivXed video. They won't be used as monitors per-se. There will be no tuning at all, just video from a basic machine that is attached directly to it.

    16-core desktop?

I need to find a reason to play with one of these. Considering I aim for 18dB on my desktops, this made me laugh. Other than DivX-ing movies really quickly, or VMWare-ing an enterprise in a suitcase, what could I do to justify the price of one of these?

    [news] - Free VMware Server?

I just got my first VMWare server in, just for testing. It's a Tyan B2865 Transport GT20 which features a S2865 Toncat K8E motherboard. I just used their web-based removal tool and it worked perfectly. I'm nearly certain that there is nothing still running on my PC. The system on a reboot is using 90MB of RAM (compared to the 160MB+ with NAV on it). Right now, even with FF and AVG running it's only using 130MB of it's...
