Not that I know of. I was getting tired of the conflicts, so I disabled the keyboard shortcut and but a button on the taskbar.

    UPS Help

I think UPSes are just crap as far as QC is concerned. I've run quite a few Belkin/APC models from the basic to moderate size. They all fail way before I think they should. Even when used to ~30% of their capacity and never experiencing an outage.

    Multiple-office file server

Some background on my progress (for the record) and then more questions. Thanks to information here, I switched to pfsense for the firewalls and it is working great. I may begin using it for all my firewalls in the future. I have the new servers in place. They are all running 2003 R2 SP2...

Beijing in the summer reminded me a lot of NYC in the summer. The snow probably did the same thing; hide all the dirt and knock down some of the pollution. Couldn't hurt.

ReadyBoost for the Rest of Us?

ReadyBoost didn't do much in the first place. I saw so little (no) improvement that I pulled the thumb drive just to clean up "My Computer".

    Monitoring PC usage

I like monitoring usage at the gateway, it makes things cleaner. Of course, this won't save you if he is playing Solitare or other non-internet stuff. Smoothwall has an easy to add plugin for DansGuardian and some other reporting capabilities. Probably not the solution you want, just an idea.

Yup, it seems like an awesome lens. I just convinced my buddy (who I got hooked on photography) to buy one. I'll borrow it in a couple weeks to see what it does. I know I want it to be part of the kit I bring to Moscow.

    More Vista nonsense

A great analysis Tannin, but your software list is downright ancient. I'm not saying that it doesn't do what you want it to, likely better than newer software, but your customers won't stand for a DOS-based word processor or Quattro. I didn't switch to Vista for me, I did it for them. Now that I...

    More Vista nonsense

Because the day will come that some piece of "must have" software won't run on XP. QuickBooks, Photoshop, Some custom app that requires .Net version 55. Just hope that they have released some OS that doesn't suck before then.

Office computers - dual core these days?

You mean like this little gem with VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs on it for $80?

Office computers - dual core these days?

Well said Tannin, and in that vein I must recommend a C2D over an A64. Even if you take a hit elsewhere. What used to be 0.5-1 second waits are now gone. Even when I was running Vista it was just better.

Office computers - dual core these days?

I built some super-cheap servers using E4500s and a Gigabyte board with on-board video. The thing seemed much "snappier" than my previous A64 X2 6000+. Was it actually faster in high-load applications? Unlikely, but it felt faster just moving around the UI. So much so that I finally bit the...

Office computers - dual core these days?

I do dual-core for everything these days. Specifically C2D chips; they just seem faster than the A64 X2s. 65W Dual-Core 2.2Ghz for $125

Cable speed sucks - router to blame?

Low power consumption and low noise are the key to making it practical. If you also need something small it will cost more, and something pretty will be even more. Look for a motherboard with 2 NICs on it and a CPU that consumes as little as possible. Use a CF card (256MB is plenty) with an IDE...

Server 2003 install of SP2 failing

What I miss about the Intel P4...

Because of the factors you mention, comparing things that use gas to things that use electricity is too tricky for me, and likely impossible to generalize. Heat pumps work much better if they have an underground heat source. Pipes buried in the ground give it a much larger source of energy than...

This morning I hated Zoos. The animals are kept in cages and that can't be a good thing. The whole concept seemed fairly barbaric. The SO really wanted to go, so we went anyway. While there, I noticed the number of kids that were loving it. I expected screaming toddlers and other children...

    SATA II problem

Welcome to StorageForum. SATA I vs. II will not cause detection issues; backwards compatibility is not a problem. I'm mystified about geeks

Indeed. Especially geeks. California is without a doubt the place to be. Houston (where I am now), on the other hand, isn't. At "Bush International Airport" they actually make announcements that if you make rude comments to police they will arrest you. Who didn't figure that out on their own?
