    dSLR thread

While I'm in Russia I'll be carrying around my camera gear in a rucksack because all of my camera bags scream "rob me!". I'm thinking of sticking my spare lenses in 2 layers of thick hiking boots, would that be protective enough? What should I be thinking about?

    Build Recommendation for Father-in-Law

It is quite standard Antec; it works well. The side panels on most of Antec's cases are a bit on the thin and wobbly side, though. If you stick a piece on Dynamat on the door panel, it should help. Just get the one made for a license plate, that should add enough mass to calm any fan vibrations...

Pharmacy industry's manipulation of the public

Man, that is a lot of drugs. I have no insurance and pay about $50 a month for us (birth control). In my adult life, I have probably paid $300 for all the drugs I've ever taken. I find it very hard not to blame the consumers.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Very interesting find. They don't move and don't generate heat; why do you need a case at all? Do what I've done and attach them using double-sided poster tape to the underside of an optical drive; keeps it out of the way and easy to change cases.

    Hardware firewall / router

What security features do you want? If you aren't hosting stuff inside, anything with NAT-ing capabilities should be as secure as anything else (no external ports open). Of course, if you are hosting stuff or want to VPN into your house, then a smoothwall would be a good idea. The only thing I...

I suspect the architecture has more to do with it, Bozo. Even going from a higher-clocked A64 X2 to a C2D made for a snappier experience. I've been keeping my task scheduler on my second monitor for about a month now, just seeing what uses more cores and what doesn't. 99% of the time, those...

Like all things I've seen for LDAP, it goes something like this: LDAP is easy! Configure a big load of it manually like this ...and if you want any data in it, you can add it manually as well...somehow It also doesn't look like it allows updating at all; only adding entries in text mode and...

Sharing contacts in outlook without exchange?

Looking at the pricing, it requires MDaemon as well. 6 User MDaemon - $130 6 User Outlook Connector - $120 Not bad compared to Exchange, but they have exchange already. I was hoping to get them off a server completely. I'm even using Jungle Disk for their backups.

When I took over this client, it was a single user. The local PC company had taken her to the cleaners with a Dell PowerEdge running SBS2k3R2 and every service running, a top-of-the-line Dimension for herself (including 2 hard drives that weren't even configured!) and a PIX 501 firewall. All of...

Other than the WD drive and the proc, Bozo's list looks pretty good. The faster-clocked single-core will likely do better for a basic user (35W!) Samsung makes a much faster drive (16MB cache, higher density) for $20 more.

Sharing contacts in outlook without exchange?

3 users. All they need to do is share a contact list (all have it open at the same time) in Outlook. It seems a really stupid reason to install an exchange server. Please tell me there is an easy way to do this.

    Alternate keyboard layouts (dvorak, colemak)

Perhaps this is what happens when you outsource the final design to people who don't speak the language the keyboard is designed for? If this happened on a Cyrillic or Hebrew keyboard, I would have no idea. Still a pretty big design screw-up, laptop keyboard designers have been taking too many...

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

Taxing poor people doesn't work because the government is giving them money to start with. Would we take some of that money back? Sterilization before receiving welfare seems like the only way, but even I don't like the idea, and I'm a cold-hearted bastard.
  39. ddrueding

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

A wonderful idea. Except that poor people are able to evade all taxes completely, so it wouldn't be a disincentive.
  40. ddrueding

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

Thanks for the insight, mubs. That certainly sounds like a problem. I don't think any government-mandated population control will be effective unless it involves forced sterilization (which will have the problem described by mubs) or forced abortions (which won't go over well, either).

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

I agree e_dawg. I also agree with JTR that, in theory, given enough technology and money to implement it, and enough political will to see it done, we could have a global population in the tens of billions. But I really wouldn't want to be there. In order for people to live that densely...

Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

I agree that not having more people is better than killing people, but this is a more slippery slope. I can't imagine a socially acceptable way to restrict people's ability to have children. And if it is optional, the ignorant and poor will outpopulate those that are needed to support them!
