I have the original 18-55 that Tony gave me with the camera. Unfortunately, it is fairly beat up, so shooting at high f-numbers causes the scratches to become visible. I'm really enjoying using the 10-22 @ f29. The DOF is really awesome.

A 20D (though I sense a 40D is in my near future). I'm taking Tony's advice and keeping it at 400ISO or under. I'm not running around Moscow with a tripod, so faster exposures are a must. I'm really looking forward to getting a good light tripod and working with longer exposures.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Nope, I meant 1952. Bozo is right, most weren't repatriated at all, but died here as laborers even after the war was over. Here is a very nice write-up on window technologies since the 70s.

I'm loving this 10-22. I'm sure that I'm using it more than I should, that many of the pictures I've taken would have benefited from my 35/2 (which is a very nice lens). But it's a new toy, and I like the different perspective it brings.

That is a lot of pictures. I've been here about a week, and I've only burned through 28GB. Even if my files were the same size as yours, I would only have about 68GB worth.

Not a problem here! The glass itself is so non-flat that any distortion from the space could only help.

It looks like you need to test your write speed to the array. RAID-5 is very fast at reads, but much slower at writes. Depending on the controller configuration, it could make the problem worse.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I'm not really sure either. I'm still researching the concepts of superinsulation. If the objective is to reduce our demands for energy, specifically fossil fuels, than heating and cooling less is better than more. My time here in Moscow is making this more apparent. Here, double-pane windows...

    Where's everybody?

The buses still use mag cards, but the minimum card is 10 rides; and no cash is allowed. The minimum subway pass is also 10 rides. There are a few pictures of the subway on my Flickr account, but I was strongly discouraged by the police and don't have a less conspicuous camera with me so I think...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Either heating or cooling year round is bad idea. We heat about 3 months of the year and cool never. Even when we do heat, it's a 10 degree difference. I'm not saying that massive amounts of insulation can't correct a big part of that, but I am saying that living in a poorly insulated house or...

    Where's everybody?

It is the best I've ever been on. RFID-based tickets make getting on a snap. Trains run every line at 2 minute intervals 20 hours a day. The ride is rough, but very quick; it takes 10-30% as long as a car on most trips. Combined with the very common practice of paying a private car to take you...

I went to the nicest photo store in Moscow today, and the prices are exactly the same. Canon 1D III is 172,000 rubles. The small Gitzo carbon fiber tripod was also within ~5%. Only difference is no sales tax.

    Where's everybody?

This city is more like Beijing than SF, but riding the escalator down into the subway I saw the same bored/tired faces with headphones and briefcases. The infrastructure sucks, law enforcement is lax, an there is a lot more smoking. So pretty much just like Beijing.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

This is a bad thing? I've always thought that lots of people living in an inhospitable climate - particularly in poorly insulated homes - was as bad as driving an SUV. It is another massive waste of fossil fuels and source of pollution that will need to be resolved.

The claim is "scheduled maintenance". The truth is that they've been doing it since early in communist times, and haven't gotten the memo that this isn't what "customer service" is about. It is very common for banks and other businesses to have their shops buried deep in the basement of some...

I was only in Shanghai for 3 days, Hong Kong for about a week. So far I've been in Moscow for 2 days, and it is pretty much the same. Poor city planing leads to laws that need to be broken, everyone breaking some laws makes enforcement of any laws lax, this leads to chaos and corruption...

Not a bad place to start, actually. But the current generation isn't going to be much better; they'll be buried in MySpace and angst-ridden reality shows. Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Other (more expensive) energy sources have already been found, but I don't think the short-term mentality of corporations (and most consumers) will allow them to get out of the dependency on oil before they hit the wall. All of the CO2 in the oil used to be in the air at some point, but not...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

So, based on your statements above, I'm assuming you believe there is plenty of oil to be had? That we won't need to worry about not having it in the future? I think I have found the difference in our positions. I know back in the 60s-80s there was a lot of talk about "oil independence". That...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The cost of refining isn't at issue. The amount that can be refined is. We are at or very near refining capacity; so even if 200% more oil was dumped at our doorstep, the supply of gas (and therefore, it's price) would not be significantly affected. I also think that the high global oil prices...
  34. ddrueding

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

All the evidence I've seen points to a lack of refining capacity in the US for the high gas prices. Although increasing oil production couldn't hurt, I don't think it would help that much. A 100% tax on gas would probably be the most effective method to encourage intelligent consumption.

Something I realized when looking at Handruin's fast zoom is that they get big and heavy really fast. Pharmacy industry's manipulation of the public

If you want fixed-price medical care, do it the way I have in the past. Do your own research and find a local Doc-in-the-Box. Walk in, and tell them exactly what you want. I've never had an issue getting a prescription or injection that I asked for, once I convinced them that I had done my homework.

I got a dry lens brush and used a can of air to clean/charge it. It took perhaps 15 passes to get it completely clean, but the result is excellent. I can appreciate the technical superiority of the "wet method", but it wasn't necessary for me, and mine was pretty bad!
