SSDs - State of the Product?

Not as quick as my 16GB Mtron parts; they went from $1300 to spares on my shelf in about 8 months.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I use the double-sided tape with foam in the middle. It made more sense when I was doing it with spinning 2.5" HDDs (vibration isolation), but I still use the same stuff now.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I've grown into my 80GB Intel SSD, and my current install is about 60GB. There is no way I'm scaling down to 32GB. 64GB, maybe, but I don't know if the mothboard soft-RAID could handle the 400MB/s of a RAID-0.

I actually meant the 14-24/2.8, though he also had the 28-70/2.8, and the already mentioned 85/1.4. I think he shot about 30GB of 12MP RAW while he was here.

When I said, "only guy around here" I meant literally around here. I knew two others who had Canon gear, and we would swap lenses and try out stuff, but one got out completely and the other switched. I still think the 5DII is the right camera for me, but I don't know when I'll be able to try one...

Bah, the guy ditched all his Canon gear and brought a pair of D700s and an army of lenses I wasn't familiar with. There was an 18-something F2.8 and an 85/1.4 that were very good. Now I'm the only guy around here with Canon gear. He specifically said that Canon can do 80% of what Nikon can do...

I actually offered to sign the equipment over to the company at no charge; I'm going to be there for a long time, and I want a nice place. The policy we settled on was that you cannot bring in personal stuff that can store data, but everything else is OK.

There is a virus called "XP Antivirus 2008". It is not microsoft software of any kind. That is part of the trick. XP comes with a firewall, but not AV.

    New VMWare Server

If you are only using VMWare Server, than it is absolutely worse. If you are using their whole suite of applications, then it is nice to have the same interface for all of them. I didn't have the "clunky" experience, or the crashes, so I can't comment on that.

That is interesting, here is what happens here. You hire someone to start spending money for you (wedding planner), because it goes out the door way too quickly for you to do it alone. You prioritize a guest list, and adjust the sliding scale to the size of wedding you want (full list >200...

That was last weekend. I knew I would be damaged, so we made it a week early. I ended up going through a complete 750ml bottle of Belvedere before drinking an entire bottle Coppola's Director's Cut. Let's just say I still haven't recovered.

    Webcams and simple software?

I'm getting a bunch of requests about webcams and simple software. People want to talk to grandma or the grand kids. I'm hoping for recommendations on the best cheap cameras (under $50), and the simplest software to use. I have never done it, so I'm hoping someone here has. Thanks.

The Samsung is purely a staging area for backups. All the running VMs will be on the SSD, with scheduled clones to the Samsung at night. This is part of a successful backup strategy I've used for a while. Every machine backs itself up to a local store during the "maintenance window" at night*...

    Gaming across 3 monitors?

    Gaming across 3 monitors?

If I had 3 52" 1080P screens in front of me, and I wanted games to play across all three (driving simulators specifically), what would it take? Is this only possible with software that is designed for it? Most gaming cards only have two outputs, would games support a pair of cards? Is ATI or...

If there are a significant number of people without health insurance, they go into the emergency room for anything, so they get flooded with patients who don't pay, so the hospital stops putting resources into...
