He had nothing to do with setting it up. His daughter is a close friend of mine, and simply didn't understand what was involved. Dad knew what was involved, but assumed that the daughter had already talked to me. Minor misunderstanding, and (as is my reputation), I made it right. I don't have a...

I did enjoy shooting the wedding, but I would have enjoyed it more without the pressure. Of course, the pressure gave me the cojones to do things I wouldn't ordinarily (walk in front of people to take shots, order people about, etc). The fact that this was my boss' daughter getting married, and...

I'm presently working with IrfanView's "move" feature, but that requires two key presses and manual slide advance. Anything better out there? BTW: Managed a 4.3% hit rate at the wedding, with quite a few failing because the flash had not recharged in time...not bad.

What programs do you use to look for "keepers"? I'm looking for something that will display the first image in a folder full-screen. When I press "1" it moves the file to a folder, pressing "2" moves the file to a different folder. Either way, once the file has been moved, the next image is...

Nah, I think I did alright. I shot about 16GB of pictures (~1200 RAW), and learned that I need more fill with that kind of background (outdoor, in the shade, with the sunny lake and snow-covered hills in the background). Just a 430EX isn't enough, and it doesn't recharge fast enough, either. 95%...

    Win7 x64 on ICH9R?

    Where is the next CPU?

Silent PC Review did a great write-up on it. Mainly better ventilation and support for their new, non-ATX power supplies. The PSU is now large enough to have a 120mm fan blowing straight through. My last three cases have been P180s (with a twelve hundred stuffed in there somewhere). I am really...

    dSLR thread

I'm in Tahoe, shooting a wedding today. I was invited as a guest, and they asked when I got here "you did bring your camera, right?". I thought, sure, no problem, they wand some candids after the pro leaves. Nope. No pro, just me. Happy to do it, just hoping I don't screw it up too badly. I...

    Something Random

You can get good care, but you have to pay for it. Go to a boutique practice and pay $300/mo (no insurance). That way you can have as many doctor visits as you want, be able to e-mail the doctor directly, and know that they are willing to spend as much time with you as you like. Of course...

Two graphics cards and a sound card in this machine, if I can get that many ports onboard. So it is technically possible.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I did give him a hard time for some astroturfing, hitting all the talking points without anything bad to say, it sounded like he had a homework assignment. But other than those he was a great asset to the community.

    Where is the next CPU?

The 5420 looks like a great deal. I didn't read if that ASUS board supports single-chip operation, but that would be one hell of an upgrade path (plenty of faster chips, supports tons of RAM, tons of SATA).

That is a sexy board, but a pair of these would have bumped the price considerably. I also couldn't find them in stock anywhere. It also only has 6 slots, so getting 24GB in it would be very costly. Maybe next time around.

swapping laptop screen for higher resolution?

I haven't done this, but here are my thoughts. 1. How standard is the interface to the monitor? 2. Is the power the correct voltage? 3. Are the mount points the same? If Dell sells a Inspiron 15 with the required screen, that would be the best bet.

Yup, and removing the splitter entirely. Both monitors behave consistently independently as well.

    Where is the next CPU?

I doubt I'll have it more than 6 months, and will be able to sell the system with these bits, an optical, and a 120GB SSD for about $3500. The only reason I don't do it more often is my time.

So you still need the camera wired to a computer, and you can then send it to an iPhone? I can do that with RDC already. If it was a piece of hardware that let me control the camera directly from an iPod touch, we'd really be in business. ($200? $350?)

The trick with my upgrade cycle is that if I keep it short, I don't lose any money. Quite a few people come to me for system builds, and when someone is looking for something really high-end, I can offer them a deal on mine. I'm completely honest with them, explaining the loss of some of the...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Not a chance, Stereodude. The mfgrs. will stop running ads for big trucks, and stop marketing SUVs as mandatory if you love your kid, but they will still be there. They may even put some margin back in the big car market, while running ads for small cars and talking them up a bit. But they won't...

Correct. The monitor on the wall always works and the monitor near the computer always goes black. Same behavior with the VGA splitter or with only one of the monitors attached directly to the card. I did fiddle with it a bit, and the card is very securely set in the board.

I have a computer that is built into an industrial trailer, no way to move. It is connected to two monitors via a simple VGA splitter. Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I find that highly unlikely. You said the same thing about CAFE, and you can still buy 1000+HP cars that get single-digit mileage if you want to. The only thing this is going to do is change the cars that the mfgrs. are marketing hard. You act like everyone knows what car they want, when the...
