    It's HOT

I have a 600CFM fan up there (about 5k cu.ft.), but I was wiring it in at the time. It'll be much better once that is running and set for 75F.

I'm up to 10-15 miles at about 16 miles an hour. Still a wuss compared to my triathlete coworkers (one just finished the Race Across America), but I'm feeling good about it.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The only thing I was worried about was the RAID controller on the Revo Drives not being detected properly by ESXi. An SATA drive, provided it doesn't fail, requires no verification to make it work.

SSDs - State of the Product?

One of the downsides of wanting more reliability is having to wait longer for the QA. I haven't gotten an answer on ESXi and the RevoDrives, so I'm going with some Intel 510 250GBs instead. This way each VM will get it's own.

    It's HOT

Yesterday it was 101F in my attic, even with the fan on, even though it was overcast. Couldn't work for too long before the mask clogged with sweat and had to be changed out.

Wireless router: 8 port, gig. Easy turning on and off wireless.

If you want to go hardcore, get a pair of these and some of these, add the rest of the hardware and software of your choice (Smoothwall, for example with some basic modifications), and that is about as hardcore/fast as a home-user could possibly want.

SSDs - State of the Product?

With the 960GB version coming in at just over $3k. As soon as I can verify compatibility with ESXi I'll be ordering one. Our DBs (currently running on some X25-Ms) are taking a beating.

    New business machine baseline

I'd have to agree with Coug; I have had a total of one parallel port requirement all year, and USB->PS2 adapters have only been needed twice. It isn't worth compromising your main build for such a niche requirement. Intel BOXDH55PJ LGA 1156 Intel H55 Intel Core i3-540 Clarkdale 3.06GHz Crucial...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

It started life as a mod, then became popular enough that they decided to release it as it's own product. The graphics are not it's strong suit, though it looks decent even at 2560x1440. The strategy is really the impressive part.

    Cool Fan Idea

I still don't understand how the heat is effectively transferred from the static base to the moving heatsink. First it says the static air of the boundary layer is a problem, then it says that the heatsink is separated from the base by a cushion of air?

    Tape Backup Solutions

So Mercutio has got me thinking about tape backup systems. The total amount to backup is ~15TB. What systems (hardware and software) should I be looking at? Presenting "The Coffin"

Honestly, I've never had to set up a tape system before, and I seem to be fundamentally opposed more than is reasonable. Media Player Appliances

But this is a fundamental problem on it's own. IIRC, dedicated hardware decoders are way more efficient (cost and energy consumption) than a general purpose CPU is for the same task. If that is the case then we do need to settle on some codecs just so we can get the high efficiency decoding...
