    SSD performance on Intel chipsets

I really want to get a SSD for my boot drive, but the prices are just way too high right now. My Cheetah 36ES is getting really old. It probably isn't even faster than most new 7200RPM SATA drives for most applications any more.

Does anyone foresee or know if the quad core CPUs will come down in price in the near future? ~$300 seems like a lot for a CPU.

Virtual OS safer than Real OS?

You could just download one of these ready to go VMWare images, then all you have to do it open it and it's ready to go. No installation necessary.

    Something Random

5 years is generally when you start to break even. Anything less and you will probably be losing quite a bit of money. The longer you stay in a home the better though. Go for a 30 year fixed loan if possible. I have a 5 year ARM set to expire in 2010, I could have afforded a 30 year fixed loan...

Barracuda ES, worth the price over 7200.10?

I ordered 3 Samsung 500GB drives 2 weeks ago from Newegg and I have to say that they were packed pretty poorly. There was not enough peanuts in the box so the bubble wrapped drive was right up against the edge of the box. Also the bubble wrapping was not even sufficient in my opinion. One edge...

    July 22nd Intel price drops

If you wanted to try out Ubuntu, try one of their live CDs or try it in VMWare, that would at least let you know if it will do what you want before you install it for real on your machine.

Why do I have crickets in my basement

Get a caulk gun and walk around the perimeter of your house filling anything that resembles a hole. If the hole is too big for caulk then get that expandable foam, I have seen it at Home Depot or Menards.

    Best onboard video?

I built a friend's HTPC in the Antec NSK2400, it worked great except that this video card was too tall, so we had to bend the top panel of the case around it, just something to think about.

Psst, Tannin, Safari comes to M$, the browser for the rest of us

I think the major problem with Apple software running on a PC is that Apple always tries to port the UI. If they stuck to the regular Windows UI many of their problems would vanish.

    July 22nd Intel price drops

That's what I figured. I would probably be fine with a Core 2 Duo, I guess I will just check out the prices when I am ready to buy. So, when will the best time to buy an Intel CPU? If the price drops didn't affect the market that much maybe it is better to wait?

Damnit David, no one other than you wants to run Vista. Plus, CS3 officially supports Vista.

    More Vista nonsense

CS3 installs fine as long as you know how to install it. I am running the entire Creative Suite 3 perfectly on 2003 Server. I have run into 0 problems after I got it to install. You just need Microsoft Application Verifier, which you can use to spoof Windows XP during the installation. After it...

Your anti-virus software: Which, why, how?

I do web application development. If I didn't have admin rights, I wouldn't be able to do my job. I need to be able to start and stop services, install software, and a million other things that I can't do without admin rights.

Your anti-virus software: Which, why, how?

I run nothing on my home computer. I am supposed to be running Norton Corporate AV on my work computer, but it made everything so slow that I disabled all the Symantec services to speed things up. I'm smart enough not to get a virus, so if I get in trouble, I will just plead ignorance.

YOUR FAVORITE VERSION OF MSFT OFFICE?

Google Spreadsheets are great if you want to have 2+ people edit a document at the same time. I have done it with 4 people at the same time. It's kind of like an instantly updated wikispreadsheet. I thought I might have invented that term, but just googled it and I was wrong again.

    Flash Video Rant

I think Flash video is one of the only thing that Flash excels at. Everyone (85-90%) already has it installed, so it is extremely easy to integrate into a website. There are lots of free players out there that have nice features already built in, like fullscreen, volume controls, etc. And it is...

That's good to hear. Any gain I can get will be appreciated even if it is only 5-10%. After using the system all afternoon it does feel a little bit faster, which is nice. Hyperthreading Questions

My work computer is an old Dell Optiplex GX270 with a P4 3.2GHz CPU. Needless to say, whoever set this up was not very bright. Someone added a second hard disk at some point and they never enabled the controller in the BIOS, the hard disk showed up in Windows, but it was running in PIO mode...

    What really slows Windows down

I think the HDD on those leased IBM boxes are slow as sin. At least the ones I have used have been. I have admin rights on my box at work and I went ahead and set all the Norton services to manual. My work machine is already slow enough, I don't need Norton to make it any slower.
