Netgear Gigabit NIC...Should I Use it?

Cas you are correct, it is 4096 bits or 512 bytes. Thus my analysis doesn't hold water and that inefficiency goes away. There is still inefficiency but many frames are larger than 512 bytes and thus for most purposes, it won't be the big deal I thought it was. Thanks

Netgear Gigabit NIC...Should I Use it?

I've been studying the Gigabyte standard and I don't see how you can get much more than 4x using half duplex copper. The reason why is that the GB standard takes standard ethernet frames that are a max of 1522 bytes long and adds filler (the standard call this a carrier extension) to the end to...

The great hard drive cache myth

If you look at the ATA command set, there isn't a unified method of dealing with a cache. Before version ata-4 all you could do was turn on/off or set the size of the cache. ATA-5 allows for flushing the cache but it is an optional command. ATA-6/7 the flushing command is mandatory. I looked...

The great hard drive cache myth

I'm sorry but as I read my post I realized that I made a mis-statement It is obvious to me that many drives actually now use a true write cache rahter than just a buffer. There are obvious performance benefits to elevator seeking and that is undoubtably why that decision has been made by the...

The great hard drive cache myth

I think this topic has strayed slightly from the original post of the danger of a HD cache to HD benchmarking. I'm going to comment of the original issue of the danger of a HD cache. First a read-only cache is not dangerous at all, because the data is still on the HD if the HD shuts down...

    Monitor strangeness

On the surface, I would say LCD's would last longer, because there are fewer parts. However, in the end, I don't really know. I don't have any long-term data and I don't know enough about their construction to know what are the normal failure points or even how or why they would fail. I think...

    Monitor strangeness

I diagree that monitor size has anything to do with the deteriation. It is the electronic parts that are causing the problem, not the screen. The resistors go from 1% to 5% or 5% to 10%. The insulation within capacitors slowly degenerate over time. As these parts, as well as others...

    Monitor strangeness

Tannin, I may not be writing much, but I visit everyday, read everything and write where it seems appropiate. When replacing a working piece of hardware always note that it will be replaced by a refurbished piece of equipment. The replacement may actually be worse (or better) off then the...

    Monitor strangeness

Tannin, you left off one other possibility - There is a magnetic disturbance nearby like a unshielded speaker causing interferance. However, the most likely cause is simply the monitor's interior electronic parts have deteriorated somewhat. This is a relatively normal aging process of a...

Alt+Print Screen doesn't work on my W2K test machine

Alt+Print Screen doesn't work on my W2K test machine

Yes there are 3rd party clip-board applications. The native clip board has limitations to the number of entries which are extended by the 3rd party programs and there are applications that add the ability to organize and label the entries.

    Trouble-free video card

I would have put the TNT2 down near the bottom of the list because when the TNT2 was releasted it took so much current most motherboards couldn't deal with it either (Like the GeForce256). My suggestion would be to try it. After all, it probably will be no worse than totally disabling the 120mm and the HD fans. Maybe, you will find it will work better with less noise. You really won't be able to tell until you try it. It is generally very easy to change a fan from intake to...

Try switching your 120mm intake fan to an exhaust fan and disabling the 80mm HD coolers and see if that helps. The point is to force all the air to enter via the HD's cooling them. The next issue is to discover if you short circuit the air flow over the CPU and MB by causing the air flow to...
