    xSATA and SATA 6G news

Few will end up dealing with the XSATA multiplexers and we really don't need 6mbps when drives are still constrained to a maximum of 100MBps. What I want is for SAS to replace SATA totally. SATA is simply a subset of SAS and that means SAS controllers can operate either SATA or SAS drives...

On idle, at stock speeds, and displaying 2D stuff the card runs exactly 49 C. The default settings are a GPU clock of 500MHz and RAM at 600MHz. Running the ATI overdrive automated clock config produces temps of 68-70C and produces a GPU @ 632 MHz and RAM at 716MHz. I delibrately downgrade...

    FAH - GPU core discussion

I have the x1900GT IceQ and I have to admit it runs relatively cool (for a modern high performance video card). Matter of fact, I overclock it signifigently. One does pay a signifigent premium for HIS IceQ cards though. It cost about $50 (aprox 15%) more than the low price for a generic x1900GT.

    Modifying boot.ini

Won't work -- The SATA drive boots just fine as long as the IDE drive isn't connected (so there's no need to reinstall the SATA). The IDE takes boot precedence over the SATA when they are connected, so modifying the SATA boot.ini won't help. Feel free to try again.

    Modifying boot.ini

I'm starting to run out of ideas on how to safely access the IDE drive while the SATA is connected. We still have the option of using data recovery software; We have the application of the ERD; and we still have the option of doing an inplace reinstall without formatting or changing the...

    Modifying boot.ini

Just as an incidental, have you ever tried to boot into safe mode or any of the other diagnostic boot modes on the IDE drive? I don't hold very high hopes for it, but it is something that hasn't been mentioned and is relatively easy to do: After selecting the IDE install, start pressing F8...

When using the recovery console, the SATA drive is disconnected: We aren't going to modify the SATA drive at this time and we don't want any mistakes. Nothing can happen to the working SATA drive install, if it is disconnected. After the boot.ini file has been replaced on the IDE drive...

We are trying to get the SATA install running with the IDE drive installed, so you can access the data on the IDE drive. The multi-boot boot.ini was stored on the ide drive and that is why the ide drive is connected and the SATA drive is disconnected: We don't want you modifying the wrong...

Really, chkdsk on the SATA drive shouldn't have been able to hose the IDE drive install. OK, lets try something, that I have not done before. I'm gonna try to fix the IDE's boot.ini file pointing to the SATA drive using the recovery console Currently, when you have both drives attached, and...

It was my understanding, that you could boot to the drives individually and that was how you knew the boot.ini files had been damaged. If you can't boot to the ide drive individually, then we are stuck there. There are only two real choices to get the data back from the IDE drive. The first...

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

If gaming is no longer a priority, then the 6100/6150 series is an excellent choice: It is probably the best current onboard graphics, but only a little better than ATI's Xpress 200 series.

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

There are no onboard video solutions that don't "Suck" for gaming, in any FF. All current and past onboard video is just plain not powerfull enough for gaming. It does fine for business work, but modern gaming is out. 300w for a high quality PS is more than enough, untill a modern graphics...

    Modifying boot.ini

Bozo, you can get independant boot.ini files if both installs, were done when the other drive was disconnected. In this case, there were early issues with not loading the SATA drivers which will also make the SATA drive invisible to the OS during the IDE install. So, my point is, it is...

    $280 NIC

I would argue that a commercial T1 ISP is much more likely to be connected to a higher-level ISP (Fewer hops) than a retail DSL line. also that ISP is also much more likely to connect to redundant high-level ISP's that will allow for a better path selection (Again fewer hops). Further, a...

NEWS: "USB Flash Drives Are Failing"

each address/cell in Flash RAM has a limited number of write cycles before it fails. It is not an explicit number but rather, a probability that failure will occure on each write. Statisticly, it may be 100,000 cycles on average, but inactually it could be the first, or it could be the...

NEWS: "USB Flash Drives Are Failing"

I doubt that fragmentation is causing overheating. However, fragmentation will create isolated locations that get an extraordinary number of read-write cycles compared to normal and that may be what is causing the flash to fail on lower-end units. Just my guess on the situation.

I went out and bought an Antec p180 case to replace an old poorly designed ATX case that just couldn't keep the temps down. Fiddling with case fans and regreasing just wasn't soling the problem. I have to say, I like the new case except for the fact of no speaker. It also fixed the temp and...
