That has always broken app installs for me. They still show up, but double-clicking them causes either a crash (Photoshop CS3) or a re-run of the setup program (Office 2003).

If I were to get some SSDs for this, I take it the access pattern here would highlight the performance issues of the cheaper/larger MLC SSDs? So I would need the Intel ones, or something equally fast?

Thanks all. It is very unlikely that these files will be read sequentially. Based on the design of the file structure, it is virtually guaranteed to be 100% random across the drive.

With explorer crashing and fundamental parts of the OS not being accessible, I wouldn't waste more time digging; I would just start a re-install now. Of course, finding the culprit can be fun, but you are likely doing it the "hard way" from here on out.

When the shortcuts disappear, does the start menu go as well? Sounds like explorer is crashing.

Write cache is the big deal, particularly for RAID-5 setups where write performance can suffer. Read cache is done as well (customizable I'm sure), though that wouldn't matter so much with SSDs.

I've gotten kinda hooked on soaring in MS' now cancelled Flight Simulator X. Unfortunately, the terrain sucks in that program. A program called TileProxy takes a local cache of MS Virtual Earth files and replaces the default terrain in real time. The files cached from MS are 256x256x32 JPGs...

Dunno, but I'd imagine they would. You're wasting 70% of the cost if you aren't using arrays. Are you just looking at sticking 2GB of cache between slower SSDs and your system?

I bet it is. Areca cards were being compared favorably to 3Ware cards last I looked.

I would take it to 4GB of RAM, just because it is so cheap. I think even at stock speeds the E7500 will beat a 3.6Ghz P4.

Yup, that is why I switched from 4-day to 3-day trips. Day 4 always hurt a lot, and it is better to be home when that happens.

Dell Precision will run 2 hard drives and an optical, and a 9-cell battery. They support pre-configured RAID-0 with X25-Es if you are so inclined ;)

No idea on hibernation, it works well for me. I leave the pagefile on as well (no choice, the laptop only has 4GB of RAM).

That looks like a good card, but it doesn't say what type of wireless connector it needs. This looks like it would be compatible.

Does the wireless card for the HTPC support an external antenna? Sticking a small directional out there could make quite a difference. I stream x264 HD over 802.11n wireless quite often.

Perhaps they are having a hard time getting the whole thing speed rated? I know I'm having some trouble just getting 6 2GB modules to play nicely at higher speeds.

I have an unusual situation that I'm hoping for some tuning advice on. I currently have a drive with 25,000,000 files averaging 16kb, and they need to be read a half-million at a time. 750GB of Intel SSDs isn't really an option, so I bought 3 300GB Velociraptors that I intend to run in RAID-0...

4GB DDR2 is still steep, but not as dear as the 4GB DDR3 modules I'm looking for ;) I would love to get the max supported RAM in this board (24GB).

The other thing to think about is that your default printer doesn't change just because it is unavailable. Be sure to select the printer you want (or change the default) when you change locations.

It sounds like the printers are going into offline mode. Try right-clicking on the printer icon and unchecking "use printer offline"

The Seagate. Less than 5400RPM just blows. And as hard as Seagate seems to be trying, they are no Western Digital.

I've had CS4 eat all 10GB of RAM I gave it and then want more. The single-core'd-ness of some operations is annoying, but some others see a nice performance increase.

Some of the beast SSDs are already passing 768MB/s and are using PCI-E directly instead. Might we see a PCI-E cable connection? No doubt lengths would be extremely short.
