SSDs - State of the Product?

Good catch. I just glimpsed at the price and divided by 100 instead (that would be a good price).

SSDs - State of the Product?

Not a bad idea. Or you could buy a 50-pack of X25-M 80GB for $28k. Sweet.

SSDs - State of the Product?

If you can't get by with 60, the next size up is 120GB for $349. Just a hair more expensive than a 15k 300GB SAS drive. Crazy, I know, but better.

SSDs - State of the Product?

SCSI is cheaper than SSD, but it isn't faster at anything, really. In my system, I've actually ended up with many tiers of storage. 1. Fastest - A pair of X25-E 32GB in RAID-0. OS, Primary Apps, Small Workspace 2. A pair of X25-M 160GB in RAID-0. Large workspace 3. Four 300GB Velociraptors in...

    ESET VIRUS PROGRAMS?

So long as they are getting regular updates, I don't think it matters too much. Of course, viruses do try to disable AV programs, so having the latest is probably a good idea.

    nVidia SLI and Multiple Monitors

Cool. I purchased an 8500GT (that I haven't installed yet) to drive the other two monitors. It would be nice to use the full power of the GTX295.

Network Printing Problems with my Laptop

I'm sure you knew this, but Vista sucks at sharing to clients. You might even be better off with something like this. Even more reliable if you skip the wireless part and wire it into your network.

You are only vulnerable to that worm if you have enabled SSH access from the red (outside) interface and your password is easy to guess. It is not enabled by default, and can be disabled easily. It is not a big deal.

    Optimising for very small files

Ah, right you are. This is actually a 8500-4, which uses individual SATA-PATA bridge chips, but is otherwise a 7500. 64-bit PCI is pretty old, though. Perhaps Greg wants it?

    dSLR thread

I don't mind them letting the ISOs go beyond what the sensor really should be doing, at least it gives me the option if I need that shot (social events, happy snaps, whatever). 20fps 1080p is more dumb, but again, allowing the options to max out the hardware isn't a bad thing. 20fps does get a...

The camera does look interesting, and if it allowed 5 shots, each 2 stops apart, for a total range from 4 stops darker to 4 stops lighter, I would buy it today. It would be easy, the new UI would make it easy to control, and no one else does it. WTF.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Not in the way that matters. It is all about latency now for most applications, and nothing with moving parts is even in the race. RAID level doesn't play a factor. Even 5400RPM drives can do 100MB/s.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I mentioned the Supermicro M28E1 here and other places. It looked like a great way to hold a bunch of 2.5" drives in a normal tower chassis. Due to my stupidity, I didn't RTFM until it got here. On page 3-5, at the bottom, it says the following: So it looks like they sell 2 versions of their...

    dSLR thread

Interesting article, though it doesn't really go into the "power user" level of detail. I've gotten interested in night photography, specifically of areas with light sources (airports, cities, etc) taken from above. SSDs - State of the Product?

Current Max is 300MB/s per channel. Depending on what RAID mode you want, you can get good RAID performance off the onboard for RAIDs 0, 1 and 10. I wouldn't bother with any of the stuff between that and the Areca/3Ware level. Once you go there, you can saturate an 8x PCI-E connection (2GB/s)...

All it does is hold SATA drives (it can do more with SAS, but ignore that). Since all it does is hold the drives, the maximum speed is that of the drives, and whatever you plug them into.

100+MB/s from a 5400RPM...who woulda thought. Very basic and not entirely related question: Lots of small files, copied in bulk, are copied sequentially, correct? As such, their transfer rate is closer to STR rather than seek limited, correct?
