Put the Pagefile in a RAMdisk? (XP 32-bit)

Installer service won't start in safe mode (even manually), and that is required to remove it. I can't find where it is starting from to disable it.

    dSLR thread

It was a stitch of 51 shots (17x3 HDR) with a 35/2 on a 1.6-crop body. Exposures were around 1/4, ISO100 and f11. I like images that have lots to look at, not just trying to "say" one thing. I like that even though I took the picture, and was there, and did the PP work, that I can go back at...

    dSLR thread

:p This one is an SD shot (tripod isn't sturdy enough for HDR @ 300mm). They all have shadows, to a degree ;). The main thing I like Photomatix for is giving all areas some detail through localized DR exaggeration.

    dSLR thread

Based on our earlier posts, I doubt it, but worth asking anyway. Does anyone have issues with Photomatix working with large (100MP+) images? Some I can get to work in the ~30MP range, but I had to take this one down to 11MP (original was 175MP, great detail). It is simply refusing to open...

    *PCI* SAS controller?

The only ones I know of are PCI-E 4x/8x or PCI-X. Depending on the motherboard, the PCI-E 1x slot might be open-ended, allowing a 4x/8x card to run in it?

Put the Pagefile in a RAMdisk? (XP 32-bit)

Looking around for RAMDisk software that can handle larger amounts of RAM, I found this. For those wanting to keep holding onto XP 32-bit, this could be the way to better performance.

Put the Pagefile in a RAMdisk? (XP 32-bit)

No idea. But it was under 2 minutes before. Now I can go upstairs, BS with co-workers, grab a soda, come back, and still be waiting. It's crazy. I'm actually pretty close to rebuilding my workstation just to get rid of it.

Put the Pagefile in a RAMdisk? (XP 32-bit)

Nope. I have the pagefile pointing to the 2GB RAMDisk that I can't get rid of, and it isn't set to backup/restore. Works fine.

I know that a DNS change can take 48 hours to replicate globally, but I typically see the results within hours. You could make it even faster by changing the TTL of the DNS entries.

Best way to protect a Windows PC

I have installed NoScript on computers whose users are naughty, without telling them how to bypass stuff. I just tell them they can't go anywhere it won't let them. You seem to have the rest fairly under control. Unless you feel like setting up a scheduled Acronis imaging as a backup.

Merc, Even after getting the right humans, there are so many other steps required to make it work. The standard is so much higher as well. I tried to follow their directions, but didn't get past installing it before the above issues occurred. I'm certain this is not the intended behavior ;). Put the Pagefile in a RAMdisk? (XP 32-bit)

I installed the one that was linked earlier as part of the OCZ SSD performance thread. Good side: In it's standard configuration, it works. Bad side: Any attempt to change the configuration, stop the service, or uninstall the product causes a BSOD. My system now also takes 10 minutes to boot...

For the record, that Supermicro 2.5" 8-in-2 hotswap thingy that I linked to earlier? The one where the version I bought is 50% crippled? That says it supports SATA and SAS? It only works off a SAS controller, not SATA. Crap.

I am not a fan of large government or excess regulation, but the two lessons I would like to see learned go like this: 1. Something Random

Yup, it is quite heavy, and it does feel some of it in really tight corners. I was actually looking for a heavier car, so it would be safer towing the boat (2500 lbs). Hitting the limiter was quite obvious, there really was some extra room in sixth, you felt the car simply stop accelerating.
