Now setting up an 8-drive RAID6 with a hot-spare. Can someone here give guidance regarding the "Greater Two TB Volume Support" setting when creating the array? The options are "No", "64bit LBA", and "4K Block". I believe "64bit LBA" means support for GPT and is the one I want?

Initialization time in RAID-6 looks to be a third of RAID-10...looks promising.

Not in my experience, but I have never tried to create a RAID-0 on an expensive controller, just the onboard stuff.

The fan noise is comparable. I'm only gaming on a 42" 1920x1080 Sharp AQUOS, but I like high framerates. Once I turned it above 4x AA, the framerate went to crap.

Sorry, didn't see this before. No, you don't. It warns you that any data on the drives will be destroyed, and then the array is live. There is no redundancy, so there is nothing to verify.

Oh, and one of the 1.5TB Samsungs failed on its second power-up, so it switched over to the hot spare already :(

I'm concerned about the added complexity of NATing, setting up port forwarding rules and the like would complicate things. Particularly as some of the machines in the 2.x network need to talk to machines in the 1.x network using different protocols.

I think SD is right, though most of my arrays are AID0, so I don't have this issue. Edit: Thinking about it, most of my arrays are AD0, since they are SSDs ;)

Those are remarkably good write speeds considering it is RAID-6. I'm in the middle of creating a RAID-10 array with 6 of those drives on an Areca controller with 2GB cache. It will be interesting to compare the results.

Fushigi's suggestion is excellent. I might even suggest that you remove the circuit board and rinse it separately. There is a vent hole in the drive to allow the platters to breathe (or in this case, drown) so I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Nah, anytime I need files shared over a WAN link, I set up DFS replication. Works pretty well.

It isn't a big deal either way. This is replacing a T1-based VPN, primarily for connections to a Citrix server. Those play nice on a WAN.

The quad port cards are amazingly expensive ($400+). But if this shows a significant improvement, the main fileserver and it's backup might get one.

The WAN is actually rated at "at least" 5.5MB/s. I'm hoping that will be enough.
