    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

Write Back. Something is wrong, I'm setting it up for a massive RAID-0 now.

    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

Better, but not great. 319MB/s max. I'm wondering if softRAID would actually be faster?

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

I can tell you that a Coolermaster Stacker fits quite a few of those Supermicro drive enclosures without any mods. That was the combo for my first mondo file server.

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

Um, no. Disabling the fan and not handling the cooling some other way would cause them to run 30-ish above ambient. Still in many peoples comfort zones depending on what ambient is. Or just silence the alarm and put in a quieter fan.

    8 x 1.5TB + Perc 6i + RAID-6 = Faster Storage

I meant, I wasn't supposed to have enough time to start it. The missus and I are supposed to be driving to Shadowbrook for dinner before dancing...but she's still "not ready", even though I would have declared her "ready" before she started. It's running now, along with MS Update, but they are...

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

There is a jumper to disable the fan, or allow a fan swap. If you don't use the jumper the alarm will be very annoying.

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

Don't bother drilling holes, double-sided poster tape does a great job with 2.5" drives. I've been doing it for years without issue. I also wouldn't fool around with 4 separate consumer-grade hotswap bays. Just get one of these and don't worry about it anymore. It also ups your max drive count...

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

I'll second the 'dude, and also recommend against a CF->IDE in this instance. The headache I'm dealing with today revolves around corrupted filesystems on CF cards after unclean reboots. It seems to be worse and more frequent than with regular drives. I'd use a 2.5" drive for the power savings...

    Supermicro RAID card

You don't lose anything, you just restore from backup. This is the part of your position that I don't understand. Here is my example setup: I have a RAID-0 array and a RAID-6 array. They each contain the same information. Therefore my information is stored in two locations, one of them having...

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

General purpose lighting, but some utility capabilities would be nice. I'll be doing work at night and in attics and crawlspaces, so the ability to illuminate an area would be nice. Something I can keep in my small work bag for when I need it. I'm thinking of a pair of these.

SSDs - State of the Product?

    Four displays

Just for grins I dropped a PCIe 1x 4350 in next to my 5870. I had to re-install the drivers (didn't have to with nVidia) but you do get 4 in XP x64

    nVidia exits the chipset business

Yup. When I went from a fast AMD system to a C2D I was blown away. There is a snappiness there that isn't elsewhere. And the boards/drivers are excellent these days. The only things I buy are Gigabyte boards with Intel chipsets and Intel boards with Intel chipsets.

SSDs - State of the Product?

There is no such thing as a "sweet spot", more drives=more throughput. Add drives until you saturate the bus and call it good. Onboard controllers use the CPU and RAM, so "fast processors" and "lots of cache" are understatements. With SSDs in large arrays saturating the entire bus, you don't...

SSDs - State of the Product?

My main reason for wanting a faster CPU was for single-threaded app performance. It's difficult to max out all the cores for very long, but maxing out one is easy. The reason for getting the EE is that you can't turn up the FSB much with that much RAM, it just doesn't like it.

A 25-pack of the correct bulbs arrived today. They never got back to me, nor requested the old bulbs back, just shipped me the right ones. They are 6000K, which is quite a shock compared to the 3500K standard in my office, but things are easier to see and read. Unfortunatly, the CRI (or...

With SLI, it sometimes required a reboot to switch. Not very happy with the long startup times of a RAID array.
  30. ddrueding

    Four displays

Yup. You don't need identical cards, either. I've even done ATI/nVidia combos...but that is the devil's work. Keep in mind that you can also have a pair of 9500s in SLI driving a single monitor and another 9500 driving other monitors on it's own.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I suggest going with 3 Intel drives instead. I currently have 3 Vertex in RAID-0 and it just saturates the bus. The slightly faster access times of the Intel would be appreciated.

SSDs - State of the Product?

FYI: The G2s do ship with an adapter. It's basically just a metal plate, mounting the 2.5" drive from the bottom and the 3.5" from the side. There is no way it is compatible with any kind of hot-swap, as the 2.5" drive is centered in the 3.5" space.
