    RAID SSD controller?

Just about any RAID controller will work. The pre-packaged one I purchased includes 4 OCZ Vertex drives and an LSI SAS controller.

    Audio Equipment

I have made basically my entire system HDMI, except the Wii and the VCR, which I can't. I don't want to run extra cables all the way up to the ceiling-mounted projector, and use an extra remote just for them.

That is an option, I'm more tempted to run a bunch of XP VMs...I hate all the crap involved with a terminal server.

    VPN and DFS monitoring

Thanks Handruin. I realize that I worded it incorrectly, and the emphasis should be on the DFS replication performance. I will take another look at Servers Alive, as it has been a while.

    VPN and DFS monitoring

I have a company with three locations. Each is being served by a cable modem connected to a WRT54GL that establishes the VPN link between them. At each office is a Server 2003R2 machine acting as DC, DNS, DHCP, and DFS. Everything is working as expected except the DFS. It tends to not like files...

    Home NAS

I had a couple of those cheap NAS devices at one point. The fastest I could manage out of one (that had GbE, no less) was 7MB/sec. None of them performed decently. If I didn't have all my storage local to one of my machines, I'd be getting a Windows Home Server.

    Audio Equipment

I don't really understand this whole thing. I know that many people don't like Klipsch because of "Horn-loaded tweeters" or something. No idea what that means, or what the deal is. What I like about them is that they sound good down to really low volume.

Thanks for all the advice so far. It looks like I will be trying to acquire some Polk in-wall speakers via eBay as I can. I suspect I'll be looking at the TCi and not the LCi, but compromises are what they are. I'm currently battling to get an RS4, so I can let this slide.

My wife has voiced her...concern...over the size and appearance of some of the speakers I'm looking at. What are people's thoughts on in-wall/in-ceiling speakers/subs? This (compromising with her) is one of the ways I can grow my budget.

    dSLR thread

I don't think that's right. I think it would be more appropriate to say that we expect progress. When I go to replace an old camera, I expect something comparable to be less, or to get more for the same money. It seems noise is no longer acceptable at all. I know on my XSi I cringe whenever I...

Yup. 5 speakers and a sub for under a grand. Decent in this case refers to something appreciably better than what I have. The set I have now needs to go somewhere else, so I can't just upgrade some of them. I am not opposed to buying used, but know nothing about speakers or where to get them.

That will definitely be the route to take if it turns out I'll be spending any significant amount of money. The speakers I have now are the ones that came with my $300 Onkyo HTiB kit a few years ago(1). To be honest, these speakers are just fine for my needs, but need to be allocated...

AV Software that allows port opening?

ESET makes the good program, NOD32, which is a great antivirus app (IMHO, the best) They also make "System Security" or some such that tries to replicate all the crap that Norton and McAffee do; firewall, app scanning, internet nannying, etc.

ATI CCC Advanced Mode on Server 2008 R2 x64
